TWO POPULAR ERRORS. [Newspaper Article] — The Dawn — 5 March 1891

¥W0 pernio Ei^e^g. iflKläßWO universally accepted character gyKjBffly istics of women are these ;-loqua (nrjSKyî) city, and inability to keep secrets, "«"CxS"* and every man in his instinctive |[[' and spontaneous thought and speech Jjl accepts these ptfpular beliefs as w established natural facts. Though T many men use a'chivalric tone-in public speech about wom'en, and many great men write reverently of women, and very many men have a tender and strong affection for the women of their own circle, yet in common talk and jest all men fall unconsci ously into the popular disparaging way of speech about womankind. A hundred jests and proverbs about the foibles of women have resulted in a general undefined con tempt for the sex in the mass, therefore we commence the attack upon two representa tive errors in the hope of discrediting them all, for we hold it very important that women should be truly and justly estimated, since it is a tendency in human nature to live up to, or down to, t...

Mrs. Isles, of Finney and Isles, and Mrs. Chapman, of Edwards and Chapman for the employers ; Mrs. McCunuel, secretary of the Woman's Section of the Labour Federation, and Mis» Bailey, head of the Bootmaker's Union for the employes, and Mrs. L. Cooper and Mrs. Neill, the original government nominees. AT a recent meeting of the Brisbane Literary Circle to discuss Booth's book "Darkest England," a gentleman, who stated that he had resided for many years among the Mor mons said, the only difference 'between thea and the Gentiles, (as outsiders are called) was, that the Mormons took all their wives at once, whereas the Gentiles took them one at a time by help of the Divorce Court. He said no state in the world could compare with Utah in prosperity. He was a little confused as to whether the prosperity arose from polygamy or irrigation. The ...

NEW ZEALAND LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — The Dawn — 5 March 1891

NEW ZEALAND LETTER. BY 'EXCELSIOR. THE cause of Woman's Suffrage is slowly but «"rely gaining ground in this country, and cer tainly the women of New Zealand have a strong right to the rote if energy, industry and intelli gence can strengthen their rieht. The opponents of the cause say that most women would not use the vote if they had it, but as far as my experience goes I am convinced that the greater number would do so. Sometime ago Mr. Fish M. H. R. proposed that as a census is about to be taken, a paper should at the same time be sent round to ascertain tbe wishes of the women of New Zealand in respect of woman's suffrage. But on Jan uary 29th. when the House of Iiepresentative8 met i i Wellington the Premier informed Mr. Fish that the Registrar General was of opinion that to take a vote of the women of the Colony on the female franchise would cost a considerable sum. He (the Premier) did not think it would be advis able to try the experiment at present. Perhaps the Premier is ...

THE WAY OF SUCCESS. [Newspaper Article] — The Dawn — 5 March 1891

THE WAY OF SUCCESS. TTTHE most useless waste of human force is in the thriftless, diffusive method which the ordinary mortal has of applying himself or herself to the particular task in hand. What ever duty or purpose is worth performing at all is worth the concentrated attention and effort of the moment given to its discharge, and the moral and intellectual impetus gained in a daily discipline of this sort determines with absolute certainty the triumph of desires that lie closer to the will, and which are in fact the index of our special individual use. That he who is faithful over the small things of life will be faithful over the greater also is a truth that we accept, not more because it was divinely uttered than because our own obser vation and experience constantly confirm it. The calm, clear, self-poised soul knows al ways the way to make the lesser affairs of life subservieot to the larger, and in the multiform activities of the day there is no flurry of doubt, hesitation, o...

JHE jioMK pABINET-y^LAKFR. Hints.-You can dye pine, deal, and other white woods a beautiful rose colour by a solution of iodide of potassium ; also by a solution in hot water of bi-chloride of mercury. To Gild Leather.-Moisten it with a sponge, stretch and tack on boards, then apply solution of isinglass followed by one of white of egg. On this lay silver foil with a brush, pressing down with ball wool. Paint with yellow and varnish when the surface will assume a golden hue. Staining Woods.-In staining walnut or any dark-coloured woods to a mahogany colour, put half an ounce of dragon's blood into two ounces of good alcohol and shake occasionally. When dissolved put as much of this stain into alcohol as will make the wood the colour desired and go over it with a brush. For pine and other light coloured woods add a little burnt umber to the above stain. Glue.-Powdered glue added to a common glu» strengthens it.
