No Gas. Ddhing the time the draft agreement between the Nowra Council and Mr. J. H. Keep, a Sydney contractor, was in abeyance, with every prospect of the fate which 'lias since overtaken it, the councillors received numerous letters from other contractors prepared to enter upon the business. These letters ruffled the aidprmcn, or at least several of them, to no little extent, the hitch over the Keep agreement being con sidered of Sufficient worry to the Council without the pestilence of more offers to light the town with gas. Now that the body, corporate has declined to complete the contract with Mr. Keep, two or three other speculators are in the field. Mr/ A. A, Tournay, of Bowral, who successfully installed the Kiama gaslight and made the company a paying concern, wrote last Monday offering to erect gas works for the Council. Messrs. J. Coates and Co , a Sydney firm, also wrote offering to estfiblish gas works and accept debentures at 6 per cent, interest on the security of the ...

"She Wanted to See The Wheels Go Round" [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 February 1893

'She Wanted, to See The Wheels Go Bound-' There was once a bright baby boy who loved to examine the internal structure nf his uncle's watch in order, as he remarked, that he might ' see the wheels 50 round.' Srrart and inquiring fellow 1 Some day he may make a watch that will keep better time than those which are made to sell and can with difficulty keep tip with the days of tbe week, to say nothing of hours and minutes. - , But for a hundred persons who know huwa watch is constructed how many know what kind of 'works' are inside their own bodies? Not one. Now the heart is the human pendulum. Sometimes it beats too fast and sometimes too slow. What makes it aot in that way ? Can you tell? Probably not When its irregularity frightens you, you see 'a doctor.' Why. don't you study up the subject yourself ; and learn as much about it as any loco motive driver is bound to know about his engine? Can't? Yes von can. . ' . . ', Look here, for instance. Sheep-farming ia Australia. SIR SAMUEL WILSONS'S ERCILDOUNE STATION. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 February 1893

Sheep-farming: in Australia SIR SAMUEL WILHON'.S ERCILUODNE STATION. The London Graphic says: — Sir Samuel Wilson's Ercildoune station in Victoria is one of the model pastoral properties in Australia. In size it suffers by comparison with Sir William Clarke's magnificent possession in the same colony ; but in natural advun tuges, in wealth-producing capabilities, and in point of completeness of detail, it stands unrivalled in the well-named ' Land of the Goldon Fleece.' If one wished to accurately measure 'the squatter's progress ' since the good old pionoering days of the ' billy ' and the blanket, the slab hut and the camp-fire, Ercildounce would be the place to take your stand and do the looking back wards. The life of the old-time 'squatter' was one of peril and privation, tlie hardest of work, the plainest of food, and with the ever present risk of receiving a visiting card from some black savage or white ruffian in the form of a spear or a bullet. Not infrequently in those day...

The War Scare Again. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 February 1893

The 'War Scare Again.. In Europe the periodical alarm occa sioned by this cry, seems to increase in intensity each succeeding year, and a general consensus of opinion prevails that the mighty strain caused by the constant increase of armaments and their vaBt cost, must necessarily, at no very distant date, produce a convulsion among the nations somewhat analogoui to the bursting forth of a number of huge volcanoes breathing devastation and death all around. Reasons' are not wanting in support of the common belief that a tremendous war is imminent. Russia's long nurtured aspirations for ex tanninn ifif ttiprit.nrv and lnnainan frit* n' foot-hold in European Turkey, and the attitude of France and Germany towards each other are considered to bs patent factors tending to a precipitation of the crisis. Other elements exist fraught with danger to tho world's peace. Tho far reaching, indeed almost universal, conflict proceeding tsvixt labour and capital, and the vile machinations of Anarch...

Boycotting at Quirindi. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 4 February 1893

Boycotting at Quiriadi. The ' Gazette ' says : Quite a lively war is going on between the local publicans and the Good Templars. It seems to be originated in this wny : The I.O.G.T. Lodge caused the secretary to write the sergeant of police com plaining that the local publicans sold duringprohibited hours. Thesecretary of the lodge is the son of Mr. Douglas, baker, and the publicans agreed not to deal there again so that when Mr. Doug 1aR itininr. wpnh rn'nnri wif.h fclip lipf»n.d nn usual, publicans would have none of it. Then Mr. Robertson, : of Mr. J.Teb butt's store, is said to be instrumental in working up the agitation inthe lodge, and a deputation from the licensed victuallers waited on Mr. Debbutt, ask ing for a discharge of the alleged offender ; otherwise they would not deal at the store.
