TENNIS AT LOKQUON. Our correspondent writes:—A pleasant afternoon wag spent on the Lorquon Tennis Olub's ground on Wednesday afternoon last, when a new team, calling themsolves the country team, played a match with members living in the township. Tho games were keon ly contested, and ended in a draw, with j 32 games each. Tho teams engaged I were: —Country—Messrs A. Dorrington, Schneider Bros. (4), Zadow and B. Sieinering, Township—Messrs Bolwell, Hill, Statten, and Mrs Bohvell, Misses R and 0. Vanstone, R. Ratcliff and M. Afileck. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies, and was very much en joyed by the players. By all appear ances we should have some fast players in the district in tho near future—both ladies and gentlemen.

" MUNICIPAL BREEZE." A fresh brepzs sprang up at the meeting of the Lowan Council last Friday, which threatened at one period to wreck the municipal ship on that turbulent sea off Cape In spector of Nuisances. Ore Clark and Bolwell embarked a motion to temporarily appoint the council foro man to that position (Inspector of Nuisances). Cr Towns, who was up against this tack, raised a recub.r cyclone,threatened to "bone'' Cr Bone, and took the wind out of the sails of the gallant barque. However, several councillors poured oil on the troubled waters. The motion was carried temporarily appointing Skoggs to the position, and although Cr Towns' typhoon still had plenty of energy left, a comparative calm succeeded the storm, and the next business was proceeded with.

MOTOR ACCIDENT. A little boy, son of Mr A. P. Koop, of Mi Ni Well, received painful in juries at Port MaeDonnell, S.A„ on Thursday. Ho was one of the occu pants of a motor car, the driver of whic'i tried to turn a cornor at hisjli speed, resulr.ine: in the capsize of the machine. All the passengers escaped with bruises and scratches except young Koop, who remained in con siderable pain. After receiving medi cal attention at Mt Gambior, he was brought to Nhili, where Dr Shanasy diagnosed severe injuries to head and shoulder, and a broken collar bone.

LOWAN SHIRE WATER TRUST. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Trust was held at the Shire Hall on Friday, when the following wore pro sont:— Comrs. J Young (Acting Chair), R. Dickinson, D. Bono, and the secretary and engineer, Mr A. F. tVTagill C E. An apology for non-attendancc was read from Com. G. R. Klingo. Accounts amounting to JE30 13s Od wero passed for payment. The caretaker, Mr A. 13 lvossatz, reportod that ho was attending to tile trust's pumps. The Ni Ni East pump was fixed up, and also the trough at Red Gum dam, while Glenlee, "Winiam and Thorpe's well had received attention, The engineer said Abornatchie spring had a pump put on it. The Dow Well dam and tank were full of wator, while at Tarraugitinic and Diapar good supplies were available. Boyeo well dam was rising. Young Bros., under instructions from Messrs E. and R. Hiscock, will soli on Thursday, 26th March, 10 draught horses and 2 hacks, and also machinery, harness, and sundries. See advfc.

SCHOOL CHILDREN'S HEALTH MEDICAL. OFFICER'S REPORT The annual report, for 1912. of the Chief Medical Officer of the Board of Education, contains (says "Public Opinion"), an exhaustive account of the measures which are being taken throughout the country to safeguard the health of school children. Alto gether there are 1111 medical officers in the school service in England and Wales, as compared with 943 in 1911; 82 are women and there are 742 nurses also engaged. The Chief Medical Officer, Sir George Newman, states that it is un fortunately true that uncleanliness still occupies a large share of the time, thought, and energy of the offi cers of the school medical service, though it is encouraging to note that throughout the country the returns show a decided and progressive im urovement, and that the grosser forms of uncleanliness are now rare as com pared with the conditions that pre vailed when medical inspection was Instituted in 1908. BERNHARDT HONORED Mme. Sarah Bernhardt is a Knight of the Legion or Honor (says "The Daily Express" of January 16). The news tvas telephoned to her last j night while she was resting between two acts of M. Tristan Bernard's play, "Jeanno Dore." It became known in tho theatre before' the play was over, and when the curtain fell the audience remained in tho theatre and gave the new Knight of the Legion a rousing ovation. Then the company collected round the great actress, and she was the re cipient of a touching attention. In anticipation of the event the mem bers of the company had bought a Cross of the Legion of Honor set in brilliants to be ready to pin it on Mme. Bornhardt's breast as soon as she had tho light to wear it. HIGHWAY ROBBERY GEM MERCHANT'S LOSS A robbery of a particularly auda cious character was perpetrated on a Hatton-garden gem merchant on Thursday night (says "The Daily Tele graph" of June 3). The sufferer was Mr Morris Phillips, who carries on business in Charles-street, Hatton Gar den, and resides in Petherton-road, Canonbury. On Thursday evening, when he left his place of business, he had about him a considerable quan • tity of jewels, which he had been com missioned to sell, and in a leather bag strapped to his right wrist a further quantity of precious stones belonging , to himself, valued at about £400. These consisted of 800 carats of Indian sap phires, 400 carats of opals, and 107 pieces of turquoises. While waiting in Roscbery-avenue for a tramcar Mr Phillips was sud denly attacked by three men, one of whom dealt him a blow on the head, and knocked him against a lamp-post.
