QUEENSLAND. B&ISSASS, Friday. Parliamentary. JCha revenne returns for Aagoat show the receipts to be £298,000, being an increase of £28,000 compared with August of the previous year. The expenditure was £206,000, being an increase of £13,000compared with corresponding period last year. In tbe Assembly a number of minor bills were read for tbe first time. When Mr. Petrie'a bill to legalise consultations, practically tinder State supervision, was read the first time, the Premier stated that the bill, at a later stage, would receive strong oppo sition from the Government. A motion was moved by Mr. Drake for a census of tbe alien population. The Premier promised as soon as possible to obtain official returns giving all information available. Mr. Drake then withdrew his mo. tion. A Jurors BQI, increasing fees and exempting engine-drivers from attend ance, a Workmen's Lien Bill, and an Intestacy Insanity Local Administra tion Act, were read a second time.

THE WAR. America and Spain. SPANISH EVACUATION OF SAN TIAGO. AMERICAN TROOPS ORDERED HOME. COST OF THE CAMPAIGN TO SPAIN. (By Cable Message..) I/OXDON, August 26. General Shafter, lately commanding tbe United States troops at Santiago de Cnba, has sailed for home. The last of tbe Spanish army at Santiago de Cuba leaves to-day by one of the Spanish Transatlantic Company's steamers, thus completing the evacuation of that part of Cuba. General Miles, Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army, has been ordered to send borne all the troops under his command which are actually in Cnba. The Madrid Gazette states that the ex penditure of the Spanish Government in the Cuban campaign from January to Jane last was 457,209,430 pesetas, or abont £18,000,000 in English money.

Coolgardie. FoSSICKERS MODIUS OPERANDI. (From Our Own GorrespoHdcitf.) Cooxoakdik may be regarded as tho premier gold mining district in W.A. It maintains about 160,000 to 200,000 men, principally miners, whose wages range from £3 10B to £4 per week, the latter being the standard wage, the former for man who work on the surface. There are thousands of men who eke out a living by what is known aa "dry blowing." These men have different methods of extracting gold from the earth. Some use what is called " shakers " which consists of four sieves ("called hoppers), these are made of wire netting and are abont three feet six inches long by eigh teen inches wide. The top hopper is a coarse half-inch net, the second one is ranch finer, and the third small enough to save very fine gold.
