She was reading in bed by candlelight, fell asleep, and : awoke enveloped in flames, receiving such terrible injuries before arrival of assistance as to cause almost iin . mediate death. Over one thousand pounds was stolen during the week from tho Colonial Bauk Hotel, in Collins street. Tho thief has been since arrested. Tho river is rising at Wil- cannia, and further inundations are feared. Tho Government ha3 decided to impose a postage stamp duty of a half penny on all newspapers passing through the Post Office. The court martial on the mutineers in H.M.S^ Egeria has sentenced two of tho petty officers implicated to penal servitude for life, and fivo sea- men to shorter terms. The interest -in tho forthcoming championship race between Kemp and McLean is increasing daily, and somo heavy wagors are being laid. Stevens, J.P.'s) Chief Warden Nash appeared as plaintiff under clause 50 of the Local Courts Act, calling on lessees to show cause against the forfeiture of gold raining leases. ' Lease So. 182-H. T. Gilmore, R. Moss, and Henry Roberts. Mr. Symes for B. Murphy,- who had purchased thc lease. Chief Warden Nash testified that ho I had visited this claim on the 16th. 17th, ! and 25th March last, and there was then no one working it ; there was no sign of any work having been done recently. A.copy cf thc by-laws it was proposed to adopt was read and discussed, and it was resolved on the motion of Cr. McK-.-ddic, seconded by Cr. Bi own (all the members of the Council being present) that the by-laws as read be adopted. The Clerk was instructed to take thc necessary steps for making the said by" laws law.
