"Is it as much as I asked for, mother?" "Yes, Ralph; there are fifteen hun dred pounds ia notes in that bundle." "Mioth!" exclaimed the young man, "you really are a wonder! How ever did you get it?" Mrs. Bellairs became very white. "Don't ask me, Ralph. 1 can never tell you—never. This is a secret 'be tween you and me." "Does my stepfather know?" A WOOD THAT NEVER ROTS. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 13 May 1914

A WOOD THAT NEVER ROTS. | Engineers have often to deplore the I rotting of railway sleepers, of piles, and of wo»d _used to support galler ies, in the1)U''.d'n£ ships, etc. En gineers, cismists, physicists, biolo gists, doct'rs> who, for the construc tion of diverse apparatus may require a wood possessing a maximum resist ance to tW causes-cf destruction, par ticularly humidity, are interested in this important question of the un putresciWlity °f wood. ■ The ideal would be i° a wood of a charac ter susceptible of resisting putrefac tion nature's'• Now it appears from recent researches that the wood of the mangrove tree may be considered as absolutely unputrescible. Numer ous sample of mangrove wood (Rhizo phora racemosa) sent from French Guinea were, in 1909, placed at Col longes (Cote d'Or) in a soaking pit in the depot ol' sleepers of the Paris Lyons-Meducl'r<tnean Railway Com pany. Tit for Tat. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 13 May 1914

Tit for Tat. A well-known comedian has an in exhaustible stock of good stories. One of the 'best concerns a vjsit to a Scot tish town. The prices had been put up a little, and a man explained to a friend that he had gone to the theatre with his wife, intending to go to the pit, and had found that eighteenpence was being charged instead of a shil ling. "Of course you didn't go in?" re marked the friend. "Oh, yes, I went in, but I paid them out for their greed. I sent my wife home, eo they lost sixpence by it." After a few years of matrimony a man's originality appears to be all concentrated on the thought of some tl ing new to have for dinner. No man ever achieved great success unless he was supplemented by the right kind of subordinate.

A lively Irishman was once invited to a large dinner party in Dublin in the hope that ho would amuse and di vert his host's guests. But from the beginning to the end of the dinner he preserved a solemn and serious face. The host thought this very strange. "Why, oh] h ilow," he remarked, "I don't believe the biggest fool in Ire land could make you laugh to-night." "Try," was the wit's cutting rejoin der. Two undergraduates were walking by the banks of the "VVey, when one Of them, who had a taste for botany, plucked a plant from the bank, re marking that "it was a rare one." • "It's an out-of-the-Wey one, at any rate," was the reply.
