The important question of ho\V best to edu cate the rising generation is occupying the attention of the Legislature of Victoria — the public there are not satisfied with the present sVstem which, while it has iidt altogether failed, has fallen short of the expectations of those progressive minds that guide public opinion, the Clergy nearly en masse oppose secular education only, and regard instruc tion given in schools where the teaching of religion is not observed as dangerous. There is much to be said for and against secular education, and it is not notv in this article our intention t6 discuss the matter. The Vic torians are decidedly the most advanced peo ple in social matters :n these colonies. While they are providing education, free of a given standard, for the rising generation, they are not heedless of the rights of the labouring and industrial classes who have passed into raan bodd, and have not, or many of tbem have iiotj enjoyed the benefit of school teaching saving in t...

HAY BRIDGE AND ITS APPROACHES. To the Editor of the Hay Staxdarij. bin, — 1 had Imped to hear ct something beiii-^ done by the Municipal Council about tlie proposed j approaches to the new badge ere this. LOCAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 16 October 1872

LOCAL NEWS. Art Ukiojj of London.'— The valuable oil painting from tbe Art Union of London for 1871, which was won in that year by our fortunate townsman, Mr James MaCgregor, of the Australian Joint Stock Bank, arrived in Hav last week. It is now in charge of the Owner, who is much envied the possession of so fitje a picture. It is a landscape scene, re presenting a view on the Little Heath, Glam organshire, done by Mr j. Ci Ward, a rising English artist. When the picture was on exhibition in tile London GalWv of Arts it tvas very generally admired bv connoisseurs. The great feature in it ig the admirable finish of the foliage* and the transparency of the water, both being particularly well painted. The picture is almost too good a work of art to be bul'ied in the bush, and it would cer tainly have adorned the gallery of pointings in tbe Public Library at Melbourne- We un derstand Mr Macgi'egor was offered a very tempting price before he removed it from that city, but be preferred t...

SYDNEY. October 21. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 23 October 1872

SYDNEY. (prom OUB OWN COltEEJSPONDEXT.) Uctooer si. The money market apparently is oversup plied in these colonies as in Europe, ana capitalists are eager to take up any opening1 that offers a safe investment for their wealth. The Treasurers of Victoria and our o wn colony are fortunate that such is the case. Mr Pid dington has been placed in a similar position to M. 'T'he capitalists of Victoria, it seems, are in a?uc h the same position ; for, accofding to tb-e Treasurer of that colony, he anticipates nQ' difficulty in raising bis loan of £1,500,000. ; Very ? little care seems to ie^ exercised by* the Government of Victoria respecting the vessels fitting out from the port of Melbourne, Two c...

Many of our readers have listened to the] question so often used in sport, ' What is vour opinion of the history of the Peruvians ?' I | Just now the Peruvians are once more emerg- ! [ iug from a brief sanguinary and barbarous revolution. AH who know anything of i»eo''- rapliy, know that Peru is in South America, and that it is one of the many republics which formed when Spain had made their South American colonies *'* too hot ' to be s-overned by and' from Spain. Ihe Spaniards were at one time the foremost nation in the world, but they have, tor the last century, been de clining at bom« and abroad, and though they held sums of the richest and most delightful portions of the earth's surface — though thev had the gold mines of Peru at their command, they have become a poor, cowed, spiritless (though still proud) people.
