CANBERRA'S HIGHLAND GATHERING SPORT, DANCING AND SONG. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 March 1927

CANBERRA'S HIGHLAND GATHERING SPORT, DANCING AND SONG. An Irish writer says: "When the bagpipes sound, a Scotsman feels so good lie would give a bawbee to a blind man-if he had a bad one." Thus ho extols the power of the pipes, and libels the characteristic carefulness of the Scots at the same time. Hut even an Aussie may mildly wonder how so many braw Hielandcrs bring them selves to thc point of spoiling the look of half a crown to go to a Highland (gathering, but wc realise it is because I hey are Scotsmen that they do it, and jump at the chance of getting six pennyworth for tuppence. We did hear of one Highlander in a bejewelled car just out of thc mint, who burst «nto a flood of tears when he learnt (hat it would cost him a couple of bob lo get in; indeed, he was just revers ing to go home, when a friend, seeing his distress, offered him a drink out of a flask; this put such courage in him that he put down a dollar for himself and his wife, and didn't even wait for the change-su...

INTERNATIONAL CRICKETERS AT CANBERRA. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 March 1927

(INTERNATIONAL CRICKETERS AT CANBERRA. AU cricketing enthusiasts in the Ter ritory will hail with a great deal oí satisfaction the news that Arthur Mailey's touring team will play at Can berra on the Saturday after Easter, 23rd April. The visiting team will in clude several internationals, in Macart ney, Oldfield, Taylor and Malley, ana also Sydney's youthful batting champ ion, Jackson, of whom great things are expected. Mailey's team will be pitted against a representative team from the Federal Capital Territory Association, and some splendid cricket should result. In order to popularise this match with local enthusiasts« it has been decided to stage the game at the Northbourne Sports Oval. It is understood that it was originally intended to play the match at the only available turf wicket in Canberra, i.e., at Duntroon, but s*n intimation has been rece'ved from Mr. Mailey to the effect that the New South Welshmen have no objection to playing on a concrete wicket. TENNIS .SEASON'S OPENING MATCH The opening' matches of the Can berra Tennis Association's competition on February 26th had been greatly an ticipated by local enthusiasts. The Queanbeyan team again proved that they will be hard nuts to crack, t*s they were successful in all three matches in the respective grades. It is matter for regret that the North bourne "A" grade forfeited to the townsmen. The contest between Queanbeyan No. 2 team and Eastlake, which was played at Queanbeyan, re sulted in a decisive victory for the home team by 5 rubbers, 9 sets, b6 games, to 1 set, 36 games. CRICKET NORTHBOURNE AND QUEANBEYAN FOR THE FINAL INTERNATIONAL, CRICKETERS TO VISIT CANBERRA. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 March 1927

CRICKET NORTHBOURNE AND QUEAN BEYAN FOR THE FINAL INTERNATIONAL, CRICKETERS TO VISIT CANBERRA. Northbourne's sensational victory over Duntroon, when defeat seemed al most certain for the Division I. lead ers, has recently been the main topic in local cricket circles. Every con gratulation is due to the Northbourne men for the fighting spirit they dis played during the match in question, eventually pulling the game out of the fire by a margin of seven wickets. The success of the gide was mainly due to a fine fighting innings of 101 by Alan Scott, which enabled Northbourne to get within two runs of Duntroon's first innings score of 223. Batting a second time, Duntroon was dismissed for the sum total of 64, which enabled Northbourne to hit off the number of runs required for a four pointer before the drawing of stumps. This victory again demon strated the glorious uncertainty of cricket With only one match to go, North bourne are practically assured of the premiership in the A Division...

AINSLIE ANONYMS. [Newspaper Article] — Canberra Community News — 11 March 1927

AINSLIE ANONYMS. 'Tis rumoured that the Commission had visions of changing the name of Hotel Ainslie to Hospital Ainslie just recently-apropos of which the deposed gentlemen of said hotel maliciously mur mured-"That's what happens when you throw us out." As if we could help it. Added grace and deportment (if such is possible) is noticeable in the Ainslie inmates since the inception of the Black and White Classes. Did someone whis per that the Duke is to be honoured with a display? Stars, stars, everywhere, and the latest one to appear in the Ainslie con stellation shines in the tennis firma ment. Congratulations, Mary! The Ainslie Gardens are pretty bare these days, but cheer up girls. Helen's sweet peas will soon be ready for pick ing. Heard at Ainslie the week before the football club dance: "By summer dance, do they mean summer or evening dress?" "Are you wearing pink and gold lace? Oh, so am I; but never mind, mine's a different shade to yours." "If only I'd brought my new eveni...

CHILDREN'S PLAY GROUNDS DRINKING FOUNTAINS TO BE INSTALLED. In view of the fact that comments have recently appeared in the press regarding* the lack of public drinking facilities in Canberra, it is very pleas ing- to record that the Federal Capital Commission hah recently given approval to the Council of the Social Service Association to erect drinking fountains in the various children's playgrounds in Canberra. These founntains, which are of the "bubbly" type, are very easy to operate by the smallest child. The Commission is supplying the foun tains, and the necessary work in erect ing same will be carried through by voluntary labour by members of tho district branches concerned of the Social Service Association. Fountains will foe erected at the fol lowing playgrounds as early as possible* Ainslie, Causeway, Westlake. Acton has already been supplied with a fountain.
