ROCKY HALL. Tun annual race meeting of the Rocky Hall Jockey ?Club was lu:ld_ on Saturday and notwithstanding' that the Bemboka races were held on the same day the nominations and at tendance were fair. A heavy thunderstorm occurred about noon and no doubt kept many away. At one' time it looked as if rain had set in for the day, but luckily the weather cleared, and those who attended had a good time. Tho course is about a mile from town and situated on Mr. James Under bill's properly. All the surround ing districts were well represented. Mr. Robinson, starter, got his fields awny evenly. ODDS AND ENDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 20 January 1906

ODDS AND ENDS. Five orphans in Chicago have been awarded £3500 as the result of an action against three publicans, who were charged with ruining their father by supplying him with ? drink. Two Hindu girl twins are being exhibited in roona who are joined at the back, with their faces in oppo site directions. They have separate legs and when r one goes forward ' the other is dragged behind. The size of farms in Japan .runs from less than two up to about three' and three-quarters acres apiece. Even these diminutive farms are often in several separate pieces, the average size of which is about onu cighlh of an acre. The, little village of Llanv mynech, on the borders of Wales, boasts of an inn which' is partly in England and partly in Wales. Thus one half of the building is subject to the Welsh Sunday Closing Act, while the other half is amenable to English law. Australia's Future. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 20 January 1906

Australia's Future. Australians, according to Colonel Boll, ex-United. States Consul for Sydney, have much to bo thankful for, both with regard to tho land they inhabit, and the conditions under which they live. But they must not ho too oxclusivo. They must Hot pick and choose too closely from the people who desire to come among them, 'or to hamper progress with too rigid laws, or show too great a desire to keep their beauti ful dominion for themselves. That sort of thing will not do. They must take a broader view of these things, and if they do y\is_there_is_ 'a groat and glorious future 'before 'their country. ; 'No country had neou to.loar nniniiux oiintenigent .and industrious people, or 'that such a thing'woukl have tho effect of reducing wages; that had been proved by the experience of Ame rica, and of. Canada, and history would repeat itself hero.-- HcJiad nofear about tho future of Australia . Tho way of progress might not bo' all 'smooth, but if tho broader 'vie iv was take...

COBARGO. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 20 January 1906

COBARQO. ? I have not written for a long time, having suffered from an ill ness brought on by the operations of tho Now Liquor* Act and the en forcement of the Sober Sunday principle. The clause of the Act relating to tno penalties wnicn may be inflicted on anybody found on an hotel premises on tho Sabbath has boon variously construed or-v^ misconstrued. In Cobargo wo daren't stand about on territory over which an hotel casts its shade, no matter how hot the Sunday may be. And I am I think the first to notice and publish the fact thnt Sundays since the Now - -liquor Act has come into force have been invariably the hottest and dryest days of the week. It might be as well if all who aro true disciples of tho Licensed Victualler were to get a proper definition, from the High Court us to what constitues ' a premises within the meaning of the Act,' oven as it has boon laid down what constitutes a 'place.' Apparently a place and a premises bear a very close relation to each other viewed f...

The Bega Co-operative Creamery Butter Factory. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Budget — 20 January 1906

The Bega Co-operatiYe Creamery Butter Factory. On Thursday morning the Budgkt jmid n visit to the Boga Factory, und was met by. the manager, Mr. McVeigh, who -showed this paper over the big building erected by bllU JUUIHU^ piUUUlUl W11U11 Ab dawned on him that by coopera tion he could get the maximum value for his cream by a minimum of labor. But it was not until the N.S.W. Proprietary Butter Co. bad, by establishing factories and creameries throughout the district, fully demonstrated that the system of co-operation or concentration was possible in the dairying indus try and not confined to one set of men. The ramifications of the N.S.W.. Creamery Co. with its num berless central factories and crea meries, tapping the cream supplies of centres which otherwise wotllld have found dairying under the old unit system unprofitable and al most unworkable, opened the eyes of pioneers throughout the coastal districts to the benefits of coopera tion for the manufacture and mar keting of their...
