Wool Markets. BRADFORD, AUGUST 30. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Monitor and Commercial Advertiser — 7 January 1839

Wool Markets. BRADFORD, AUGUST 30. There is no change in the state of this surket requiring notice. The public sales of wool which we have ?oiced, and the epitome of prices we have iven in this and our preceding numbers. howt, that the closing sales were marked ith a decided improvement in price over ome of the preceding sales, ant that in tead of the buyers being fully supplied, as 'ight have been expected, with the large quantity of wool that had previausly 1 been offered, there seemed mnre eagerness a to. buy than was exhibited on the first day's sale. 'I he prices real zed in the early part a of these sales, fully equal:ed, if not ex-;c ceeded, those in the month of July ; this a caused several buyers to cease purchasing. so freely, and others that would not sub- t m?it to the prices, left the sales altogether, t and the wools were then obtained at easier I rates. But this circumstance producetl a re- t action, and brought forward buyers who t had waited and were watching the pr...

Convict Discipline. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Monitor and Commercial Advertiser — 7 January 1839

Convict Discipline. A prisoner of the name of Shepherd, was taken into custody on Friday, who had been at large six years. For absconding during this term, he wan sentenced to twelve n mnths to an ironed gang. His punishment will be we;l weighed and pondered by every pristner in the gang to which Shepherd may be sent, (and thence it will be communicated to other gangs). It will be considered by most, if" not every malefactor in these gangs, that moe year's servitude in such gangms, is not, in point of privet ion, to ibe put into comn 'etition with the chance of obtaining liberty for six years. We therefore consider that Shepherd's punishment, instead of proving a warning to the ironed convicts against absconding. will encourage them in this practice. It is singular, that after an ex perience of half a century, the Sydner Government should give such constant proof to the public of New South VWales. and the ýIother Country, of its incapacity to manage the prison population. The punish...
