MAITLAND DISTRICT COUNCIL. On Monday last this body met for tho transaction of public business. There were present Messrs. Gorrick, Caliaghan, Borthwick, Walsh, and Portus. Mr. Gorrick occupied the chair. Thu balance in favour of the Council was declared to be £28 Os. 8d. MAITLAND 110 AD TRUST. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confnmed. Some correspondence was then read addressed to various parties, relative to the public business under tho surveillance of tho Trust. This correspondence comprised the following: — A letter to Mr. Nicholls, en closing a copy of a letter to Mr. Weekes, mid n questing Mr. Nicholls to accompany Mr. Weekes on his visit to Mr. Hay; a letter addressed to Mr. Weekes, requesting him to urge on the Secretary of Lands and Public Works the necessity of having the approaches to the railway terminus at Kast Maitland repaired. The Timko correspondent, writing on the 19th of January, sends the following particuiuis: — At five o'clock this tnorning the city was thrown into a state of the grcalett excitement by an announcement that the Hank of ire land, one of the finest public buildings in Europe, and formerly the teat (if ihe Irish Legislature, was in flames, and that from the rapid progress of the fire the moat serious consequences were to be spprelicn led, The prompt arrival of the engines, however, aided by the assistance of the policc, soon cheeked the alarm, and the Are, after raging for about an hour, considerably abated — but the sccountants* and bookkeepers' o dices are, it Is feared, completely destroyed. Fortunately, the morning is perfectly calm, there being scarccly a breath of wind blowing. Owing to thu confution and excitement, as well' as to the difficulty of gaining access to the building, it Is quite impossible yet to ascertain the precise amount of damage....
