Bergalia M. I. and D. Society. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 10 July 1889

Bergalia M. I. and D. Society. This 'institution is still at workj jof& not withstanding the cold nights, stilLjiusnages to hold jits meetings. The members met in their temporary rooms on last Friday night, when, a projpfcmrno consisting almost entirely of ' readings, .- was successfully rendered. Each member contributed a reading, every effort .being freely criticised. One of the most pleasing features in connec tion with this institute is the kindly manner and good spirit in which members receive criticism, sometimes, too, of a rather severe sort, from their fellow-members. This is a feature which is well worthy of emulation by many older societies. A recitation entitled ' Mumbulla' by a member brought the pro gramme to a close. A lively discussion as to future work then followed, when it was decided that'energetic steps should be taken to advance the status of the society, A full meeting of members is requested for Friday, 19th instant, :for. the; transaction of special b...

An Exciting Voyage. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 10 July 1889

An Exciting Voyage. Full of interest and excitement as are the anuals of naval adventure, it is seldom that a story bo replete with interest aa that of the Parkhurst from Hull to Rio de Janeiro is told. We learn from a London paper that when 2,300 miles from their destination the vessel was discovered to be on fire, and from that time until they arrived in port the officers and the crew struggled incessantly with the conflagration. Again and again the iron plates of the ship became red hot from the fierceness of the fire : but so often the conflagration was checked by the injection of steam through holes made in the deck. The hardest fight occurred when the fire extended to the coal bunkers, and it became necessary to remove the coals. So great was the heat, and so dense the smoke below, that the workers frequently were brought up insen sible, and the deck was so hot that it was only by spreading wet canvas over it that it was possible to walk about. It says much for the influence o...

Protection Marching Along. [Newspaper Article] — The Moruya Times and South Coast Journal — 10 July 1889

Protection Marching Along. The return of Mr, Schcy for Redfern, in dicates in a most undeniable manner the triumphant march of protection right into the very stronghold of Frcetrade. That this single return has caused a flutter in the dove-cot of the Ministry nod the Freetvade party generally, is evidenced by the prediction of a general election on all sides ; and notwith standing Sir Henry's assertion that the Free traders will gain in numbers by a general election, we venture in mv tliut. -iIia rpivnu will be Uie cuse. Why should the rapid march of Protection lie stayed without any apparent reason 1 Nothing has occurred, that we ca.n see, to alter the country's un doubted yearning for a change of the fiscal policy. No matter what are the relative merits of the two rival fiscal policies, it is an incontrovertible fact that day.' liy day the Protectionists are gaining ground in such a marked manner as to poiu't to ail 'early adop tion of the popular fiscal policy.
