Cranbury. MARKET DAY. (From our Correspondent) [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 15 April 1910

Cranbury. Market Day.. (From our Correspondent) "Wednesday last was another of those red-letter days wll.ich prove such a source of profit to the organizers and a day of pleasure to the. visitors. The one in question had been looked forward to with a great amount of interest, as it was expected that, given a fine day, the result would be such, t>< at with the assistance of the Church E xtension Society Eng land, the debt on the local Church of England would paid off and the build ing vrould then be consecrated. These expectations we; e amply justified. The day was perfect,, and the attendance good, whilst the price:; obtained for tlie gifts were satisfactory. Early in the day ex tensive prepattttions were made bv a willing band oi enthusiasts, who did all in their power by a plentiful decoration of foliage to hide the rather dilapidated appearance o5 the old hall. Tile floor space was taxed to its utmost capacity in finding accommodation for the tables, which were load...

THE NEW NURSERY RHYMES. ANCIENT POETS REVISED. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 15 April 1910

THE STEW NURSERY RHYMES. ANCIENT POETS REVISED. How great the intrepidity needed in one wlio would advocate a new theology,' it is surely small compared with the daring needed to suggest that - the Jiursery rhymes of our infancy should actually be revised. Nevertheless the 'tiling has been done, and by a Scot -—Mr E. J. Muir, H.M. Inspector of Schools, in an amusing address at a meeting of the Brechin Local Association of the Educa tional Institute of .Scotland, After commenting lightly on the views of a recent writer that children were sent to school too early, and when they would be much, better under, their mother's influence, Mr Muir said that while'on the subject of infants he must call attention to a sea-ious . point con nected with their mora! training. ' He're ferred to nursery rhymes, which must be revised'and brought up to date. Take "Little Jack Horner." There he was, sitting in solitude, gorging fare that, was probably unwholesome—a boy who was a combination of sensualit...

SINGING AND STRENGTH. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 15 April 1910

SINGING AND STRENGTH. .Recently Surgeon - General Evatt plCiideiT in England strongly for thy encouragement of singing both in Lhe Army and the Navy. As a doctor hi' bore witness to the value of singing in preparing the lungs, for the strain put upon the vnibernal organs by physical training. I-Ic also spoke of its value as a recreation, and the im mense advantage to be derived by the cultivation of good music and high class songs, which, would elevate, just as surely as low-oilass songs would be injurious to, the mind and morals cl' any man. Doctor Arthur Summor ville, His Majesty's Inspector of Music of the Board of Education, tells us that in Japan all youths of the fighting class are bred to singing and music. It balances in the mind the physical' tiai ning- of the body, and is a source of strength. Apart from the physical benefit to the in dividual singers, the " British Medical Journal" declares that the moral effect must be very groat. The Puri tans wont into battle . singing...

SUPERIOR DAUGHTERS. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 15 April 1910

SUPERIOR DAUGHTERS. As we all know, a daughter more fre quently than a fon Inherits her-.father's characteristics; it is natural to suppose : she will therefore. possess many of his qualifications also. As a rule, a man who has a business that lie has built up with care looks to his son to give him assistance, and in the course of time to carry it ,on. It is only sometimes that this parental ambition is satisfied, oftener it suffers disappointment. Now, hatl he bestowed on ;i daughter the same education, and given her the same train ing he gave to his son to become his suc cessor, she would probably have filled the position to mutual advance.

A LONDON DODGE. THE SIMPLE CHILD. [Newspaper Article] — Canowindra Star and Eugowra News — 15 April 1910

A LONDON DOBGE. TI-IE SIMPLE CHILD. .* :■ It was' under the railway bridge at Vauxliall. The evening ■■was damp nnd foggy and very cold. The mud lay. four1 inches deep in the roadway,1 and he stood in the mud and wept. If we are to believe the prophet Blake wlien lie assures us that v • .' ■ ■ :! A robln-redbrcast,- In a cage, . Puts all heaven In a rase, what sort of a commotion ought wo to expect over a child crying its heariTout in the gutter? "Whatever Is the mutter, my little man?" I.said. "Please,'' sobbed the child, "please. I've lost my 'apenny." The sorrows of: childhood, though they are :fleuting.'arc the most tragic of all. Their effect, is so terribly out of propor tion to their cause; and they are ut terly without relief. For a man faced with bankruptcy there is always a break in the clouds. I-Io can see the day -when, his discharge granted, he shall begin life anew with a substantial capital. A child, however—but this has all been said before. His 'apenny! His ounce of...
