Epping CIILD KILLED BY MACHINERY One of the most appalling accidents which have occurred In the district happened on Monday when a child was injured before her parents' eyes so severely that she died shortly after wards. Valerie May Smith, the five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Smith, of Harvest Home Lane, was a very popular youngster. On Monday, while Mr. Smith was using the chaff cutter, she was watching him with her mother. When Mr. Smith released the belt ing Valerie went to run around the machine, but her clothes were caught in the flywheel, which was still spin ning, and she was thrown. She was rushed to the Children's Hospital but died very shortly after being admitted.

KINGLAKE d HURSTBRIDGE Hursthridge went under to King lake in their first match of the season last week, and a complete re-organ iastion of the team has been made in preparation for to-morrow's match. Butler has been elected captain, and Klaws vice-captain. Kinglake were superior in every department and by clever team work and perfect understanding they did not give their opponents a chance. Coller and Upton were outstanding for the visitors, while Butler, Klaws and Sutherland were chiefly respon sible for saving Hurstbridge from a worse defeat.

ELTHAM COUNCIL NEWS CORRESPONDENCE. Referring to a letter from Chiltern Shire concerning the anomalies in charges for electricity in various parts of the state, Councillor Price I said that it would be impossible to c make a uniform charge for electricity 1 because of the varying distances of consumers from the power lines. Councillor Bell replied that if it i were made uniform the "small" man 1 might be able to get the light. The Shire President favored a uni form charge for the country, but i pointed out that Eltham was more of a -suburban area than a country ;a:ea. Council agreed to support the move for uniform charges. * * * * Discussing a letter from the 'Gov emnment. Kinglake YOUTH KILLED ON MOTOR CYCLE A 19-year-old youth, Phillip Charles Easdown, of Kinglake Central, was in volved in a motor cycle accident last Friday night at Bundoora and receiv ed injuries from which he died on Sunday morning at St. Vincent's Hos pital. From statements obtained by police officers it appeared that Easdown was a student in the city and returned to his home at Kinglake at the week ends. On this occasion, as he ap proached an oncoming vehicle he dimmed his lights, and crashed into a truck which was standing on the side of the roadway facing the same direction as he was travelling. Deceased did not regain conscious ness before he passed away on Sun day. An inquest will be held.

Yarrambat Send. Off At the farewell function to the Rev. J. Tempany, the Mayor. (Cr. J. Ryan) paid a striking eulogy. on behalf of himself and the Mayoress to the de parting reverend gentleman, enumera ting his many fine qualities and con cluding with. the appreciative state ment that his home would be always open to their departing guest. Rev. J. Tempany expressed his regret at leaving his many friends and the di, trict and trusted that he would often meet some "of his old parishioners. Mrs. Tempany and her daughter were also present and warn?ily welcomed. EPPING OVERWHELM GREENSBOROUGH   Much to their own surprise in view of the home team's previous successes, Epping inflicted a crush ing defeat on Greensborough on the latter's ground last Saturday, despite the fact that the visiting team was not at its full strength. Being the first match between tin beaten teams this season, there was a special significance attached to the game, and Epping expected a hard fought match.
