THE LONDON SPECTATOR AND COLONIAL PARLIAMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hobart Town Daily Mercury — 10 March 1858

THE LONDON SPECTATOR AND COLONIAL PARLIAMENTS. Our London Contemporary, the Spec- tator, in an article published in his issue of the 12th of l.i-t December, has seen tit to read the Colonies a lecture upon their impertinence in having invested their Legislatures with the sonorous and lofty title of Parliaments. He tells us that we nre not to permit our self-love (amourpropre) to be affront, d at what he writes, seeing that his remarks aro only made by way of "sober suggestion." The virtue and wisdom represented by the word "Parliament" have no exis- tence in the Colonies ¡ wo are in a morn benighted condition, morally and intel- lectually, than were our Saxon fore lathers, or the Norman«, in the reitjn of that amiable monarch Johk,-during whose dynasty the first regular "Parlia- ment" was established. If it be true, as we are told it is, that tho word neces- sarily includes a Grown, and Lords .piritual and temporal, and a Hottse of Commons, then, of course, we can have no right to e...

THE SHIP TRADE WIND. [Newspaper Article] — The Hobart Town Daily Mercury — 10 March 1858

THE SHIP TRADE WIND. On the morning of the 23rd February, the ship Trade Wind from London, with 250 immi- grants was signalled ,as having fever on board The action of the Government was prompt and decisive ; the Health Officer was at once sent down, and the next day the ship was at anchor at Impression Bay, which had been appointed a quarantine station, the buildings formerly used as an Invalid Station, being admirably adapted for Hospital purposes.   The Trade Wind is the second vessel which   has arrived with fever on board, within the last   few months, the first being the Persian, and in both these cases there is no doubt that the dis- ease was the result of want of ventilation. That Immigrant ships should be allowed to   leave England, with no provision for efficient ventilation, is most disgraceful to the home authorities, and we trust, that the disastrous   effects which have followed this neglect will be a warn...
