Central Refrigerating Depots. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 7 April 1880

Central Befrigerating Depots. I Mb. OSC&b de BATQB, in a letter to the tyeaulander, introduces some new sugges tions upon the surplus slock question, which arc, worthy of republication. Referring to the proposed formation of a company in Melbourne for exportation of frozen meat, he states that one of the main features of Uic project is to kill all the meat inland at such of the termini of the railways of Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland, as com mand the largest amount of prime fat stock. Our telegrams inform ue that it is the inten tion of the directors to make some other .Australian port the place of shipment should the stock tax be retained in Victoria, and as the majority of the shareholders in the com pany are doubtless men largely interested in the northern colonies, it is quite probable that Sydney and Brisbane, or Bockhnmpton, will be choscn for the purpose. Mr. De Satgi is of opinion that Bourke will be choscn os the central point in New South Wales, where t...

The Ham who Talked too Uuch. I HE slipped into an ice cream enloon very softly, and when the girl asked what be wanted, lie replied: " Corned beef, fried potatoes, pickles and mince pies." "This is not a restaurant; this is an ice cream parlour," she said. " Then why did you ask me what I wanted ? Why don't you bring an ice-cream ?" She went after it, and as she returned, he continued: " You see, my dear girl, you must infer you must reason. It isn't likely that I would come into an ice-cream parlour to buy a grindstone, is it J You didn't tliink that t came in bene to ask if you had any baled hay, did you V She went away highly indignant An old lady was devouring a dish of cream at the next table, and the stranger, after watching her for a few moments, called out: " My dear woman, have you found any hairs or buttons in your dish t" " Mercy no l"she cxclaimed, as she wheeled round, and dropped her spoon. Cricket at Tambo. FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. TAMBO, April 1. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 7 April 1880

Cricket at T&mbo. FBOH ODE OWK OOBBEBPONDBNT. TAUSO, Anril I. ON Easter Monday the poor old Tamboite* spent another day's holiday by playing a game of cricket, vhich lasted till about five o'clock. Mr. Noose captained the winning side owing to bis superior bowling and bat ting. When be and bis little three-foot blackboy arrive in BJackali, I thick they will astonish the natives a bit. Dr. Browne cap tained the losing side, and his bowling played old gooseberry in the first innings, bis batting too was very good indeed in the second innings, but in the first he was very well thrown out by Tommy Paroo. Mr. F. W. Boddington exhibited very good cricket for bis 16. Tiie captain of the winners decided on sending to the wickets the two who suc ceeded in getting duck eggs in the first innings. But they were not so easily cnticed to let their timber foU, but managed to draw together the number of runs required, thus leaving Mr. Noane's team the victors by ten wickcts and two runs. Th...

ODDS AND ENDS. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 7 April 1880

ODDS AND ENDS. BY EDKOHOO. WELL done, " Doughboy Minimus t How funny I Into ttie question whether the ability to express ourselves in articulate language has been productive of more good or evil t shall not here enter at laige. The two faculties of speech and of speech making arc wholly diverse in their natures. By the first we make ourselves intelligible, by the last unintelligible, to our fellows. It has not seldom occurred to me (noting in our own little but flourishing town) that very often things such as pumpkins, lettuces, cabbages, turnip?, tec. (if the season or the soil be pro pitious), would shoot up lanky to seed and form handsome heads. Babel, I believe, was the first mill erected for the manufacture of gabble. In these days, what with town meetings, school committees, Boards, and Kanaka meetings, and the like , but I suppose there is scarce a village which has not its factories of this description driven by milk-and-water power. I cannot conceive the confusion of tongue...
