Ladies and gentlemen, select the right men who will really represent your interests in the council, and as everybody seems to know who are to be the elected, it will be of little avail "Toby"giving you a tip, but here goes, and I'll chance 'Whiting, Scale, and Coster, or M'Coll, Coster, and Scale, or Wightman, M'Coll, and Whiting, or Coster. WREATHS OF SMOKE. A MIDSUMMER IDYL. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 3 August 1878

WREATHS.O8l SMOKE. A MIDSUMMER IDYL. Ala I! poor fellow, he knew little of the World, for his father, although ever kind, to him, had neglected him; and the boy, naturally of a melancholy and solitary disposition, shunned the noisy and demonstrative society of those of his' own age; consequently, he had made no youthful friends, the only companions he cared for being the books in his father's library. His relations he never saw, for they. through some family disagreement, had seldom or never visited his father's house since his mother's death. Although Bertie had shared little of a father's love, yet it was the only affoc tion he had ever known, and the lad felt angry with himself that hbe had not loved him far, far more ; and he wished to be alone, and bury himself in his own gloomy thoughts. And that sohtary smoker sighed bitterly as he recalled his neglected boyhood ; and restlessly turning over on his side, threw away the end of his cigar and lit another. The boy grew up into a ...

EXTRAORDINARY CASE OF ILL-TREATMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 3 August 1878

EXTRAORDINARY CASE OF ILL-TiUEATMENT. One of the most shocking eases of neglect and tstrvation that doustless have ever been heard of in this land of plenty has come to liugt in Sydney within the past few days. The case is that in which an unfortunate o ipe, Ie, a young wn tn of 28 years, has been sutlj,.ct to l.an-continued ill-treatment at the hands of ih r own mnotlher a id sisters. The unto tunate b, ing was starved and loft exposed to the bitter cold of the season and the heavy rains till the spark of life had almost fled. The nelgghbors knew there was a terrible case of suffering alongside them, but there was never a complaint to them. The unfortunate girl could not move from her wretched bed ; that was her position for 20 years. And she was dumb. Still, when all was at rest, the unfortunate creature, neglected by her drunken mother and cruel sisters, would suddenly make night hlideous by her peculiar cries, eilher fronl pain, or thirst, or hunger. The sist-re of Mercy from ti...

A LTHIOUoG situated at a distance from the metropolis of the colony, and thus prevented from taking part in .those national demonstrations of loyalty and patriotism which can only take place in the capital city, we are not prevented from giving expression to our feelins or from showing how cordially we sympathiso with those patriotic demon strations that havo been recently made in Melbourne to signify the pride and satisfaction which the people of Vic toria take in the achievements of their leading statesmen and the success which has attended their efforts not only to bring about an honorable peace, but to retain the prestige of England and maintain her place in the front rank oflthe nations of the World. ifrrespunbrnrt. [ We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our correspondents.] ELECTION MEETING. (To the Editor of the Standard.) Sun,-The ratepayers who attended *Mr Coster's election meeting at Vining's Athe nmum on the 25th ult. will remember that Mr Coster promised to do a great deal for them. First-With regard to commons; he (MrCoaster) knowing that the noew regulations for which he was paid to prepare and submit to a committee appointed by the Shire Coun cil for approval, have been approved of by the Governor-in-Council, and published at the Shire Council's expense. Mr Coster must be perfectly aware that there can be very little difficulty in the management of commons for the future i and, strange to say, Ihose regulations have not been into force by the action of Mr Coster, but of the council. The commons can be very well managed now that tbe council have got them out of the unworkable position in which they were left when lfr C. resigned his seat u...

YEA. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 3 August 1878

YEA. -4--t- (FROM OUR OORRESPONDENT.) There are but three aspirants for municipal honors in August, viz., Messre s W. L. Ker, E. S. Purcel, and R. F. Taylor. It will be seen therefore that Mr Daniel M'Leish, juur., of Glenmore, has retired from publio life, and although he may be succeeded by an abler councillor his placo cannot be filled by a more honest one. He was one of the two members who had sufficient manly courage to vote against those "spontaneous" but nevertheless disgraceful and illegal votes which will ever remain a blot on the records of the Yea Shire Council, votes, which had then been a news paper reporter present, would never have been proposed, much less carried. Mrs Underwood, who,it will be rememl e "ed, gave birth to an infant a few weeks ago, and whose case at the time was of a trying and critical nature, expired sudden'y at her residence near Yea on Thursday. It was generally understood that the deceased lady was slowly recovering from the efloots of the illnes...

WREATHS OF SMOKE. A MIDSUMMER IDYL. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 10 August 1878

WREATHS OF SMOKE. A MIDsr3IMETR IDYL. She did so, and tried to love, honour, and obey him, as sho had tremblingly vowhl and promised to do at the altar; but the most rigid vows cannot induce a lady to treat a husband with affection whose chief attraction were his horses, hils bottle, and the rattle of the dice hnx, and of whom malicious tongues whispered something of a superb villa near l'egent's Pak. 'That may or may not have been the ease, but certain is he sehlom or never returned to hav domestic abode other wise than in a bacchanalian condition, on which occasions ho either evinced a a rung desire to smash up the Ilrniture particularly the Sevres china vases or was cerri d to bed in an insensible state by his valet. So things drifted, and time rolled slowly on, till one day, in the Park, Bierteo, riding by the carriage of lnladom Berthold,, encountered, from the first time since their parting, the wistful eyes of his lost love gazing at him from an oppo-ite carriage. Ho could no...

liirrxrurdpt & rrr ,f riahird PUIIII.1fIED EVERY BATUIRDAY " EXCELSIORI. SATURDAY, 10orI AUGUST. 'L'mEnE is one aspect in connection with the Ministerial Reform Bill now before Parliament which is likely at no distant date to occupy a considerable share of public attention, and which it seems advisablo should be considered at as early a date as possible, It seems to be generally assumed that so far as the Assembly is concerned the measure"will pass by a large majority, and it is equally taken for granted that it will be rejected by the Legislative Council. These two events are anticipated with tolerable unanimity by both friends and opponents of the nieasuro, and it will be when they have both happened that the point to which we now desire to direct attention will arise. It is freely stated on behalf of the Ministry that under the circumstances stated they will at once despatch to England three plenipoten tiaries, including the Chief Secretary, charged with the mission of in...

MELBOURNE LETTER. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 10 August 1878

MELBOURNE LETT'ER. --- (PRnoM OUR OWN CORRItPONDRNT.) The debate on the Government Re* form Bill has now been fairly launched. and so far has been conducted with a considerable amount of dignity and ability, so that whatever the result, it will no doubt constitute an import. ant episode in our Parliamentary annals. So far the only side issue of importance was raised by the semi-seditious utter ances of Sir Bryan O'Loghlen, who glibly hinted at the deportation of the Governor and the forcible expatriation of the Legislative Council if the Im. perial Legislature refused to deal with our constitution as the Government desire, but Sir John O'Slhanaessy's genuinely loyal speech and Mr Francis' impulsive exclamation of " Rule Britannia" evidently struck a key note which reverberated in the hearts of hon. members on both sides, and plainly showed the inciutious baronet that he had made a mistake in giving utter ance to his private sentiments, and be has sinlce endeavored with but ill succe...

THE SHIRE ELEC LION. -4--- On Thursday the eleotion of three members for seats in the Shire Council took places there were five candidates, Messrs Whiting, Wight man, (the two retiring councillors), M'Coll, Coster, and Scale, and resulted in the return of Mr M'Coll at tile head of the poll, with the two old members second tand third, Messra Scale and Coster being rejected. There was but little excitement during the early part of the day, but towards the close of the poll each elector who had not recorded his or her vote was looked after by the friends of the several candidates, but it was the general opinion that the result would turn out as it has done. Mr Whiting secured the greatest number ol votes at Alexandra, and Mr Wightman headed the list at Darlingford and Thornton, but Mr IM'Coll secured his majority at the other polling booths throughout the shire, Shortly after five o'clock MrAlston, the deputy returning officer, declared the state of the poll so far as Alexandra was con...

YEA. Thursday. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 10 August 1878

YEA. (FROM OUR CIRRESPIONDENT.) Thursday. Through some extraordinary bungling on the part of the printers, the ballot papers did not arrive in time this morning, and the election lhas to he postponed a week in conee. quence. The greatest disappointment and astonislhment is felt, not only by the candi dates, but by the ratepayers generally. I hardly think such a thing Is possible to occur in any other township in the colony. An old and respi eted resident named John M'~Lelland dropped dead on Tuesday evening. Previous to his being burled to-day In the Yea cemetry, a magisterial enquiry will be beld to enquire into the cause of death, which is supposed to be heart disease. IT 15 WLLt, to get cloear of a Cold the first week, but it is much better and safer to rid yourself of it the first forty-eight hours-the proper remedy for the purpose being DLr Jayne' zpectorant.
