CYCLING AND MOTORING NOTES. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Echo — 29 August 1913

CYCLING AND MOTORING NOTES. The Duplop Rubber Co. state that it looks as if some mistake has occurred in connection with the belated result of the classic French motor ride—the Grand Prix—that appeared in the press last week. This important French race, the blue riband motor event of the world, was held on July 12, over a 569 miles course around the Amiens Cir cuit, and resulted in a win for G. Boillot, on a Peugeot with J. Goux (Peugeot) second, and M. Chassignt (Sunbeam) third- par ticulars of the race being cabled to and published in the press on July 14. It is now surprising to see a report issued to the press giving a totally different result, and what is more peculiar, driv ers and machines are placed that were never entered for the race under notice, and were not in cluded in the ballotted order of starting competitors issued a week before the event. It is, therefore, very evident that some error in translation or interpret ation of a private cablegram has. -led to the peculi...

JERILDERIE. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Echo — 29 August 1913

JERILDERIE. . The clips of the season have begun to ftiid their way into the local ^railway "illation during the past week or so. So far as we hear, shearing operations all round are proceeding lianuoii ivusly. At the 1'. and C. Association's euchre tournament on Thursday evening, lasf week, (lie lady's prize was won by Mrs. S. Hodges and the gentleman's by Mr. B. Purcell. A children's dance was held the following night and was largely attended despite the in clemency of the elements. -A wedding of local interest was celebrated' at St. Thomas' Church.of England, Narandera, last week, when Myrtle, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. M'Convillc of Narandera was united in the holy bonds of matri mony with Allan, third son of Mr. and Mrs. D. M'Leish of Yea, Victoria. The weather during the past week has not been pleasant. During the early part of the week it looked threatening and a few points fell—about sufficient to stay the shearing. Wednes day was cloudy and threatening all day, a...

FINLEY NEWS. LOCAL AND GENERAL. [Newspaper Article] — Tocumwal Guardian and Riverina Echo — 29 August 1913

I LOCAL AND CENERAL. Judging by the enauiries being made of the secretary of the Fin ley show for schedules and entry forms the number of exhibits should be a record . for a first show .in any town in this State. The prize list is an attractive, one and the exhibition to be held on the pretty little grounds on Wed nesday, September 17, should attract a very large attendance. Mr. J. T. Close, whose foundry and coach building works at Fin ley arc about the most up-to-date in . the southern parts of the State, has taken several prizes recently at shows'in'the northern parts of the districts. ■ Mr. .Close will be an exhibitor in a '- very large way at the Finley ' show. His exhibits should demonstrate to visitors the fact that work can be done equally as well in this district as in the best work shops of the metropolis^ •: . There '• is a rumor current in Finley that the: money available for expenditure on the Finley Tocumwal railway line extension will shortly be spent, and that as soo...

3J0Y8' OF JbURWAUSftlr Ttlie Gwydir. "Advance," of •' Narrabri, a local Labor paper, has put up it's shutters. The following is the editorial an nouncement of the fact. "Lured by magnificent promises and prospects, v,e came and started the straight-out Labor paper. But the wealth didn't maleralisc. On the contrary, we grew thin and weak, and overloaded '.with trouble and sorro.w-—and debt I Some reputedly staunch Labor supporters would drop in and sympathise with us ancj with the cause ; and then drop 'out again, without leaving anything more substantial behind them than the shadow of their immaterial sym pathy. Some of them -would . essay to prove their sincerit" by' instructing us to "send them the paper"—but without any in structions to write out a receipt. Tocumwal Guardian RIVEFINA ECHO, and FINLEY FREE PRESS. (Established 1897.) FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 1913. NOTES ON NEWS. ' The continued dry weather of the past few weeks is having the cffect of causing somewhat grave concern in .the minds of many of the men on the land hereabouts. Although there is just at present -an abundance of grass, and crops are growing nicely (in the majority of cases), it is felt that unless a good gen eral fall of rain comes within the .next two or three weeks the season, ' from a graziers and farmers' point of view, will not be anything like so prosperous as was promised a couple , of months back when plenty of rain was falling. The truth* is that rather too much rain fell earlier in the season- than was necess ary, and that any good which was done by it has been more than counterbalanced by the- dry weather which prevailed through put. Jul v. July, this year,.- was drier than usual, and so far the .August raihfali has. bcCn con siderably below the average, We...
