CRUCIAL TEST OF LEVEES . Higher Water Certain Along ; SllnHiMMi . ppi and Levees May Xot Stand Strain . Memphis , Tenn ., March 16 . —Tht crucial test of the great levees along the Mississippi is at hand and if they withstand the pressure of the immense volume of water now rushing southward , the most sanguine predictions of the government engineers will be fully verified . The river gauge Monday morning marked 30 . 1 , a rise of sixtenths since 7 o clock Sunday evening . This is the highest stage of the water ever known here , and the weather bureau officials predict 40 feet before the crest of the flood passes . The high watermark in the great flood of 1897 was 37 . 3 . In North Memphis the situation is assuming a serious phase . Hundreds of people are abandoning their homes and every industry located along Wolf river has closed down .
