Jffo Jepriumif THE PIRE MEN . THE APPR 0 ACHINO PARADE OF THE NEW VORK TIRE DEPARTMENT . October 14 th , 1853 . The firemen are actively engaged in getting ready for the approaching parade . About 90 companies , we understand , have signified their intention of turning out , which , together with the visiting companies from adjacent places , will , perhaps , swell the number to one hundred companies . This is well , and speaks of harmony among our firemen . A correspondent seeing a notice in the Clipper that the Moyamensing Hose Company of Philadelphia , will visit the city and take part in the celebration , wishes to know if the Moyamensing is the Company with which the notorious Killers are connected . In answer , we would state , that a few years since a gang of rowdies , bearing the name of Killers , nightly met in the neighborhood of the Moyamensings house , and by their disgraceful acts created such terror in the district as to actually cause property in Moyamensing to lessen ...

Retail News-dealers of Hew York The great number of persons engaged in t he reta il news p aper t rad e of New York at this date , canno t f a il to attrac t the attention of strangers visiting our ci t y , as well a s our own ci t izen s . I t i s only of late years that the news business has become such a great branch of the vast trade of New York . In former years there were but few news depots in this city , and but few newsboys , comparatively speaking . As soon , however , as cheap daily papers began to obtain a firm footing in the community , and those who had been accustomed to reading the large sixpenny sheets , changed them for the more progressive cheap papers , a wide field was at once opened for the newsboys ,- wh o went in , to use a common expression , and reaped a rich reward for their enterprise . Their success stimulated others to follow the path thus laid out by the original band of newsboys , and s o o n wha t before had been bu...

Pedestrianism , [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 8 October 1853

Pedestrianism , The Belt John Levett once more wishes to know whether Jackson will run him for the 10 miles championship , according to the conditions he holds the belt . Levett says he does not want the belt , for if he wins Jackson can still keep it . If this does not suit him , Levett will accept the challenge of J . Pudney to run six miles , or any other distance up to 20 miles , for £ 50 or J £ 100 a side , and will pay expenses to run at Sheffield , as there is nothing but fair play there and the best man can win , which sometimes is not the case where the ground is not enclosed . Levett is surprised that Mr . Clarke should challenge any man in the world with his Indian friend , and then take no notice of a response ; but as Levett considers no Indian has a shadow of a chance with an Englishman on his merits , he will give him 100 yards start in 10 miles for . £ 10 a side in any enclosed ground he thinks proper to name . An answer to any of these through Bell s Life will be at...
