Farm , Garden and Orchard [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

Farm , Garden and Orchard . SWEET POTATO CULTURE . TWO important bulletins have recently been sent out treating of the culture of sweet potatoes as a field crop ; these are Farmers Bulletin No . 26 of the United States Department of . Agriculture , and Bulletin No . 36 of the Texas Agricultral Experiment Station . A summary of the results of experiments and directions as-given in these bulletins may help some of our readers who wish to undertake the culture of sweet potatoes for the first time : Six weeks before planting time bed the seed . If the bed is three feet wide , one . bushel of large potatoes will cover four feet in length , one bushel medium size six feet , and one bushel small seed eight feet . Where the season is long two or three crops Of plants can be drawn from the bed . If two crops are drawn two bushels small seed , four bushels medium and seven bushels large , seed will plant an acre . A few people claim to get better crops from large seed than from small seed , b...

THE FARMERS SIDE A MODERN PHARISEES PRAYER . The drudgery 1 would not do , O , Lord , assign to others ! There s much to do of dirty work ; It will . not hurt my brothers / For they have not such soul- refined , Nor slender , milk-white . hand . ¦ Id use my brilliant brain—not brawn—And thus possess the land ! A railroad king or merchant prince , I m fitted for , I trow ; Then let my brothers serve me well , With sweat upon their brow . Tis healthful for them ,. Fins , Feathers and Honey Bees [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and Livestock Weekly — 19 March 1896

Fins , Feathers and Honey Bees PREVENTION OF SWARMING . A SUBSCRIBER asks : I would like to know the best way to keep bees from swarming ? I might answer this question in a number of different ways , and none of the answers would be satisfactory . What has been written for the bee journals on this subject would fill a large book indeed . Many prominent bee papers practice or use methods of manipulating their colonies which they claim will reduce the number of swarms to a very small ratio , and claim their methods to be a success ^ while others who have tried the same methods consider them failures . While many will disagree with me , I venture the assertion that there is no practical and at all times satisfactory way of preventing swarming , and I would not advise anyone not thoroughly versed in bee keeping to attempt the prevention of swarming , for in all probability he would cause his bees to sulk and idle their time away just when they should be getting the harvest of sweets . H...
