YOUNG FARM FOllt V ? _ . . - -.. ^ . ^ <^ ^^ i * vrVt «* v * V 3 gkto OHO Oto & S & XIS CHILDRENS LETTERS Not many children have had the pleasure of meeting a real live bear out in the woods and helping to shoot him . This is what Bessie Lake , of Cadott , Wis ., tells about , and she takes the prize for this month . A Saturday Adventure A few of my friends and myself decided to go berrying one Saturday . We got up about 4 oclock and started for the station about 6 o clock , each carrying a four-quart and a sixteen-quart pail . We had to ride about two miles , on the train and then walk one mile to the patch of berries . We ate our lunch at noon and picked until 3 o clock , when we sat down to rest . Then one of us saw a large brown bear eating honey from a hollow log ; the bees were buzzing around his head , but he didnt seem to mind them , and kept right on eating . Some of the girls were frightened . I told them he would not hurt us , but just t...

F OR THE best letter we receive this month a prize of one dollar will be given . By best we do not mean the prettiest writing ; nor the most correct spelling , but we do mean a letter that tells how a woman is doing certain things about the house , how she is bringing up the children , what she is putting into their lunch pails , how she lightens labor about the house , what she does to entertain herself or her friends—there are a dozen more questions that might be suggested . They will come to you as you go about your work . When you think of something good write it down for us . ;—- For this month the prize of one dollar is awarded to Mrs . M . Billman , Mich . THE WAY WE TRAIN OUR BOY WE HAVE a little boy 11 years old who is very dear to us , our only child . We have tried to train him gently since babyhood , and have tried not to become weary of trying to guide him in the best possible way . , We have been careful never to promise him anything , not even a punishment , without f...

stm jfBg ]| g | g || tS * efll ^^ * . 1 Current Events j m £ msmsm ^ THE COMING CENSUS . THE government is already making arrangements to enumerate the population of the United States for 1910 . The owners of timber land in the Northwest are combining by organizing associations for protection from fire . It is said that fire has destroyed more timber than the lumbermen have cut . A great many men throughout the United States are taking an active interest , in the extension of parcels post ; but so far the farmers have not thoroughly waked up to the importance of this subject . The measure is especially designed to benefit farmers . It will never become a law until the farmers themselves work . for it . In some of the milk studies made at the New York Agricultural Experiment Station ( Geneva ) , it was observed that carbonic acid gas in the milk tended to prevent its souring . This seemed worthy of further investigation ; and a series of tests was conducted in which the gas was combi...

W * WmmWMW * WifWM ^ M * v . ^ tlTOf 1 Farm Pfess ^ G^ l a ^ i ^ l i iii l iiiii ^ STARTING WITH THOROUGHBREDS IT IS difficult for a beginner to make . , a start in thoroughbred live stock . There are so many things to learn , and so few sources from which to get the proper information / Most men have to unlearn a great dear that they have picked up from neighborhood customs . The Chicago Live Stock World has an interesting article on this subject by Robert Burt , Jr ., one paragraph of which reads as follows : The success of the breeder of pure-bred live stock is dependent largely on the wider distribution of their surplus stock . Tha theory is that they must sell to the man below , or to the man who would breed up to their standard ; that they must expand the number ol breeders , that from year to year , are becoming interested in the great work of live stock ; improvement . Such instruction as is outlined above would be difficult to extend to the newer men engaged in the work , u...
