m fts gaitjj gtoim ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY- ....NOVEMBER 1G 1SS4 THE NATION'S PERIL. As an independent newspaper The Astobiak lias no feeling in common with those journals -who see in a par ty triumph the downfall of the re public or the subversion of popular rights. The success of the outs at the late election can have no such blighting effect as is dreadfully prophesied by lachrymose journals. The Eepublican and Democratic parties are so equally divided in num ber, their purposes and policy are so nearly identical that a temporary triumph of the one or the other is but as an occasional note distinguish able in the grand symphony of our national union. But there is a danger that menaces our existence as a nation, and one which unless it be checked or over come will doom us to destruction. It is the alarming prevalence of ig norance in our population. Whether the Republican party shall retain control or the Democratic party shall regain control is purely a party ques tion. There are...

m vl fa ga gtffottHtt. ASTORIA, OREGON TUESDAY ..NOVEMBER 18. 1B84 ;1 BUREAU OF IMMIGRATION. The Portland Board of Trade has appropriated $175 a month "for the successful operation of a society to encourage immigration." The idea is an excellent one and deserves co operation on the part of the entire state. Oregon's population is not in creasing as fast as it should; as last as its soil, climate and resources jus--tify. Eastern Oregon is receiving an accession of population (Umatilla county cast the highest number of votes outside of Multnomah at the last election), but western and south ern Oregon fill up very slowly. Apa thy is the only reason why this state of affairs should obtain. The Portland organization seems disposed to go to work the right way. There is to be an immigration bureau, which will furnish immigrants a list of farms for sale, and send him direct to the settler, the main object being to receive and find homes for those who come to the state. It is also in tended ...

CZJ t ga giwiatt. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY-. ....NOVEMBEB 19 1884 A SENSATIONAL DISPATCH. A speciaii to the N. Y. World from Pittsburg, Penn., dated the 17th, says: "Senator Cameron has been in the city for a few days. Cameron is positive of his succeeding himself as senator, and his conference with provincial republicans from this part of the state was satisfactory. His secondary reason was to explain to those vitally interested a plan where by a majority of the federal offices would be retained by Eepublicans. The senate will be Republican, and as there are a great many officers whose terms will expire during the next term of congress, they or their successors will be immediately ap pointed by Arthur, and confirmed by the senate. As their official terms will extend over four years thoss po sitions will remain as heritages, as they cannot be removed from office, except for cause, and conduct on the part of any one of them unbecoming his position would be the only act that would r...

W fo ga gtotfan. ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY-... .NOVEMBER 21, 18St A PERCEPTIBLE IiEASON. A correspondent of the New York Bun says that the only question is where the future great city of our Pacific region is to be. Portland has grown within the last twenty years from a city of 8,000 to one of 40,000, and as it is accessible by the largest sea-going vessels, and as the general government is improving the channel through the bar at the mouth of the Columbia, there is no perceptible rea son why Portland should not maintain its lead and ultimately become a rival to San Francisco itself. The above from the New York Maritime Register, has been approv ingly quoted by various journals un accompanied by any comment bearing on the true facts of the case. While it is right and proper that Portland Bhould have a good word spoken for her, and perfectly natural that her journals should copy those good words and point to them as favorable opinions, yet it is equally right and proper that the exact ...
