It has been a big question for California wheat farmers how to get rid of the expense of sending their grain to market in sacks. This expense ha 3 been a burdensome one when the farmers were obliged to pay a fair price for sacks, but when dealers, seeing, a short supply, clubbed together and put up a job on the farmers, or in i.he more polite language of the craft, made a corner on sacks and compelled the payment of a heavy ad vance, simply because ' they could, the bur den has become almost unbearable. The farmers have been talking about trying to bring about a change in this respect for years, but each harvest has found them still in the same helpless condition, and obliged to pay round prices for sacks ...

Respiration Affected by Food.— -A very careful examination by Dr. Speck of the changes produced I in the respiratory process by the use of fatty food, of coffee, quinine, alcohol and water, and by the in spiration of air respectively rich in carbonic acid, poor in oxygen and rich in oxygen, has led him to the following conclusions : With an increased proportion of hydrogen ■in diet, the amount of air inspired and expired decreases, and nutriment, such as sugar, which contains - little hydrogen in ■ comparison with their oxygen, involves more exertion of the respiratory organs than such as are rich in hydrogen like the fats ; the more carbon predominates in the food, in proportion to hydrogen, the more air is exhaled in proportion to that inhaled, . the more carbon increases in the diet in proportion to hydrogen, the more carbonic acid is evolved ana the more oxygen is taken vp — ■while the richer the diet in hydrogen the less oxygen is required. San Francisco, September 13th.— The British fchip Krin's Star, from Antwerp for this port, with 1.900 tons of railroad iron, went ashore eight raile3 north of l'oint Reyes, twenty-eight miles from San Fran cisco, in a heavy fog. at 5 o'clock this morn ins. The steamer Senator passed and took off the Captain's wife and brought her here. The ship was lying e?.By when the steamer passed, with but little sea. Atu? waa imine diately sent to aid the ship.
