Female Philanthropists. "Who has not heard of worthy Mrs. Fry the Quakeress, who led the van in the noble work of reforming both pris oners and prisons? work so ably ear ned on by Mary Carpenter, who ex tended her philanthropic eflorts to India, in the interests of education and prison discipline, Elizabeth Fry, surnamed "the Female Howard," wau. a daughter f John Gurney, of Earlh&m, and sinter to Joseph John Gurney and Lady Bux ton. She began to preach in 1S10, and three years later commenced her work as a prison reformer. She effected much improvement in Newgate, and in ait parts of the United Kingdom, aad then she proceeded on a mission to the Co&u -sent, which occupied her during several years. She died at Eamogate in 1855, Laving; been the mother of a large fam ily.
