Children's Department OUR HUMMING BIRD. Ono day lilt October our pussy brought a little alranger into the house. It IMS s wee bit of ft humming bird. It wis so cold that it was almost frozen ; and so pussy caucht it easily. It was a beautiful little bird. The feathors on its back were green and cold, and those en Its breast were gray, and its neck was spangled. It was taken away from tho cat Tory soon, I can tell you, and was put into a nice warm nest mado of eotton. It soon began to bo so warm that it did not lik? to stay in its box of cotton, and wo had to think what we could get for a cage. Wo first tried a large csgo in which we onco kopt a canary bird. This we found was too largo, as tho bird could get through the bars of tho cage; so wo .had to uce a wiro cover, such as is used, to cover dishes on the table. We made a perch in this csge for the bird to stand and sleep on. As soon as it got warm, it began to be hungry, and we bad to feed it ; so we took a quill pen, and cut off...

Children's Department. ' CROOKED OR STRAIGHT. Two- a coral dropped down from the ftoogb of, a forest oak. Side by aide they were buried by the falling leaves, and, in time, covered with soil, washed over them by the autumn rains. In tho spring, two tiny twigs poshed their way into the sunlight. When black-berry time oame, the careless foot of a school boy crashed and almost killed ono of the twigs ; yet, it lived and grew, but was no more erect and Lcautiful as its companion, but crooked and deformed. Yeara passed, and a woodman with his aze laid them both low, and robbed thorn of their branches. Together, they were carried to a beautiful park, and with many other sticks, wero used in erecting a rustio bridge. The straight sapling was placed in the floor for men to walk upon, while the crooked one took its place in tho ornamental railing.
