GENEALOGY I am trying to find information on Justice/Jestus/Justis/ Justiss genealogy in Virginia. I'm mainly interested in John Justice and Mary-Hogue (Stogue). They raised a large family. Would like to know names of their family and his parents names as well. John has a brother named James. Would like to know about that family also. I would sincerely appreciate any information. M.K. PAGE 14 MOUNTAIN LAUREL MAY, 1986 ECHOES FROM THE MILLS Continued from page 11. We spent the first night at Uncle Ike's and Aunt Emma's in their 3 room house. They put pallets on the floor for the women and girls and the men slept on the porch, and fed us until we got a house the next day. It was hard to sleep because we wanted to see the lights and wondered when they would turn them off. You should see these lights. My love, Lucy December 8, 1914 5 Jefferson Ave. Schoolfield, VA Dear Walter, We had a right good trip considerin'... Cousin Henry took us and our trunks from the cabin at Maple Shade to Meadows of Dan in a flat bed oxen cart. The children was so excited that a couple of them rode on the tongue out of the back of the wagon. We went from Meadows of Dan to Stuart in a spoonbowl dray wagon and 6 mules. Of course the 6 mules wasn't needed just to take us and our belongin's but it would be needed for bringing produce back on the return trip. In Stuart, we caught the Dick and ...

LINKED BY STITCHES By: Beulah S. Fox "How did you happen to become interested in quilts?" I've been asked. I can understand why the question keeps surfacing. I usually have one in the frames, one cut out ready to go, and another in the planning stage. My answer is, "I grew up with quilts." My mother had quilts. She put the people around the quilt that could quilt best and the others in the kitchen to prepare the meal. Sometimes the quilt got finished in a day. She'd let me quilt a square. My next interest developed after I was married. I began a hobby of collecting quilt patterns, books, quilt magazines and articles. It was at this time that I made a Double Wedding Ring which I learned was not an easy one for a beginner. Highly imaginative names were used for patterns which have always fascinated me, names for every conceivable reason such as Four Patch (formed of four squares set together). Many little girls learned to sew this one. Some named for the Bible are Job's Troubles, Tree...

PAGE 16 MOUNTAIN LAUREL MAY, 1986 THE OLD COUNTRY STORE By: William P. Swartz, Jr In a period of time extending from the early years of this century backwards, our nation was largely agricultural. The majority of the population lived in the rural areas. Communication was poor and travel was limited. In the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountain ranges, many people lived and died without having traveled outside of their county. Some instances have been reported of persons whose entire life had been confined within their community. Consequently, they had been influenced by only their family and whatever church and school influence they may have been exposed to - with one exception. That exception was the country store. People could be largely self-sustaining except for some few staples such as salt and two or three similar items. Visiting the country store was something of an event and more than purchasing the necessities or selling the eggs for a little cash money. Prior to the U.S. Pos...

COUNTRY STORE Continued from page 16. icsville where was located the general store of Mr. Trice. Trice's Store was well known because Mr. Trice stocked groceries dry goods, clothing, hardware, furniture, fertilizer, some farm implements and miscellaneous other items. However, I was interested to hear him tell me that prior to World War I he had sold automobiles. I said, "What make did you sell?" He said, "I sold the Maxwell..." and I think he named another make also. With the coming of rural electricity many stores sold radios, refrigerators and other appliances. Some storekeepers were most ingenious. One such was Mr. Hugh Raines. He kept an excellent store and was most successful. Two thing that I recall will demonstrate his ingenuity. He was in business from around 1890 to 1926 or 1927. Both of these events involve nutmeg which has not been seen in a food market for sixty or seventy years but were a very staple and much used item in its natural form. Powdered nutmeg is still prese...

PAGE 18 MOUNTAIN LAUREL MAY, 1986 CORN COBS ©COPYRIGHT 1986 It used to be you could tell a country person from a city person by what they knew. Take the corn cob, for instance. Country folks could tell you a dozen ways to use a corn cob, while city folks thought it was great for holding corn together. Country folks knew it was great for throwing at the hogs, making dolls, or animals. The colorful cobs were used for decoration. Many a bare foot has been hurt from stepping on it. It even had its place in the out house after the Sears Catalog gave out. But best of all, it started a great fire in the kitchen cook stove. One weekend, a young friend from the city came to spend the night. As we played about the yard, my mother called from the kitchen door, "If you girls w<-nt supper, you'd better gather me up some corn cobs." After picking up the corn cobs, we returned to play. Later that night, as we sat around the supper table, our young guest kept looking over the table inste...

PAGE 20 MOUNTAIN LAUREL MAY, 1986 Continued from page 24. In the accompanying article "General Stores Enjoy High Country Revival" it is interesting to note that the folks bringing this new life to the Blue Ridge are often seeking to escape the hectic rush of big city living. After taking this peaceful tour it will be apparent why folks like Joe and Sheila Morgan from Los Angeles, California (owners of Todd General Store) found their dream on a little mountain back road in the Blue Ridge. GENERAL STORES ENJOY HIGH COUNTRY REVIVAL Time was when there was hardly a wide place in the road - as the folks call the tiny communities that dot the landscape of the North Carolina High Country - that didn't have its own general store. But the coming of the roads and the rise of the chain store spelled disaster for the general store whose specialty was serving its community's every need, from sixteen penny nails to calico. In days when a dollar was hard to come by, the general store was a swap sh...
