Which freeway route will it be? State to decide . BLUE Artist's drawing of Iho western rout* of tho Long Boach Freeway extension on an aerial map shews exactly how the freeway would appear snaking to west of the Monterey Hills Redevolpment (center right) and cutting across portions of El Serena and Highland Park. It would cross near the intersection of Ave. 60 and Collis Ave. (left center) and form a huge interchange with the Pasadena Freeway at the York Blvd. bridge. The freeway then follows the Arroyo and runs under the Colorado Street bridge to join the Foothill Freeway at Devil's Gate Dam. Blue route would cost more El Sereno homes than Green alternate. GREEN Eastern route of the proposed freeway extension, at drawn on this aerial map of South Pasadena, Is shewn passing close to South Pasadena High School football field (bottom left), cutting through- the center of the city and farming an interchange (right center) with the Pasadena Freeway. It's been around for a long time [Newspaper Article] — El Sereno Star — 21 May 1964

It's been around for a long time JUVENILE DELINQUENCY By MILTON VALERA (Second in Series) “Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority. They disrespect elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.” These are not the words of**— —•——— some harassed modem parent. Nor are they the words of an Upset school teacher or an angry playground director. These are the words spoken long ago In the fifth century B.C. by a man called Socrates. While the analogy here does Hot coincide in the strictest sense, it does indicate that juvenile delinquency is not a modem phenomenon, though it was not known as such in earlier years. But increases in both the prevalence and seriousness of delinquent behavior have made it a particularly a pressing social problem t...

$l5OO needed Help for mentally retarded sought “With public help, mental retardation can be helped.” That’s the battle cry today as volunteer workers throughout northeast Los Angeles get set to launch the “Lick a Lollipop to Lick Mental Retardation” campaign, May 18-23. The goal of $l5OO will establish at least two classes for mentally retarded children in the east central area of Los Angeles. Money will be derived from the sale of lollipops in the communities of Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, El Sereno and East Los Angeles. At least 80 children in these communities are now without special classes. According to Frank Biamonte, chairman of the campaign which is being sponsored by the Los Angeles chapter of UNICO, a national service organization, money raised will be used to purchase needed special equipment for the classes. Mayor approves Monterey Hills redevelopment ■■ , . survey started CCNA Development of Monterey Hills as a residential area moved another step forward last Tuesday when the planning committee of the City Council acted favorably on a message from Mayor Sam Yorty urging development of the 246 acres under a federal loan program. The committee vote was unanimous after Coundlmen John Holland and James Harvey Brown urged approval. With their two votes and the votes of the three committee members John Gibson, Harold Henry, Louis Nowell the measure has five sure votes when it comes before the city council and seems assured of approval. The committee asked the Community Redevelopment Agency to prepare a survey and planning application to obtain a federal loan for the development program and this is what the Mayor had asked and what the council as a whole will be asked to approve. Although it was made plain that the 246 acres is vacant hilly land, much of it city owned, and no structures will ...
