STILL LATER FROM MEXICO— LATE ARRIVAL AT MONTEREY FROM SANDWICH ISLANDS —CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS TO GARRISON THE POSTS RECENTLY TAKEN FROM THE MEXICANS BY OUR NAVAL FORCE IN THE PACIFIC, &c. The Schr. Sam Sing arrived at Monterey, from the Sandwich Islands, on the 27th January, and was to have left there on the 27th, next day, for Guaymas, La Pax and Mazatlan. Owing to the non- arrival of our usuul files of Sandwich Islands papers, we arc obliged to copy most- ly from the " Star"' of lost Saturday. A Government messanger from Monterey arrived here on Wednesday morning last, bringing the intelligence of the above arrival ut that port. THE BATTLE OF CONTRERAS. During the whole of the 18th of August, the batteries at the hacienda of San Antonio had been firing at intervals upon the San Augustine road within short distance of the spot, where, early in the day the gallant Thornton was killed. The engineers were occupied in reconnoisances, and most of the firing was upon small parties under their command. On the morning of the 19th, Gen. Pillow's division was put in motion on tho road leading to San Angel by the field of Contreras. At the hill about two miles from the latter, the command was obliged to halt and cut a road for the light batteries to pass, which was effected in about an hour and a half; and the troops again moved forward, filling up and crossing a deep ditch which had been made by the enemy, but abandoned. FROM CHINA — DIRECT. The American Brig Eagle, Lovett, master, arrived in the mouth of our habor on Wednesday, the 2d Feb. in 46 days from Canton via Macao and Hongkong. The Brig came up and anchored in front of the town on Thursday morning The cargo, of China goods, is consigned to C. V. Gillespie and Edward Cunningham. On the 22d Jan. in lat. 40, 04 N.. lon. 162, 35 W. experienced a hurricane from the N. E., split sails and sustained other damages; ran down the coast to lat. 39° We have been furnished by Mr. Gillespie, passenger in the Eagle, with a file of the "China Mail," the English government Organ at Hongkong, a paper very neateiy gotten up, rather larger than the "Californian," and well printed on good paper. The "Mail" contains the particulars of an outrage and murder perpetrated on six English gentlemen who left Canton on the morning of the 5th Dec. on a short excursion up the river, and as they did not return that night, fears were entertained for their safety.
