t- r t!55 v 4. J 1852. .ITEXAS-SOTEGPIZ-ICTE. W? fW From the Hartford (C.onn.) Times Fb. 10 1852 Letter From Senator Iluslc. Washington Jan. 14 1852 Dear Sir: It affords me great pleasure to acknowledge the receipt . of your kind favor of the 5th inst. The only difficulty I have in re sponding to the questions propounded by you hajs its origin in an ob- jection on my part to the interference of members of Congress in the selection of candidates for the Presidential chair which in my opinion should be left entirely to the untrammeled choice of the puople. In the present instance however silenco on my part might bo mis- ' interpreted ; and I therefore state without hesitation that I prefer my colleague (Gen. Houston) to either of the distinguished gentlemen named in connexion with the approaching Presidential election. In thus expressing an honest preference I have no wish to derogate from the claims of other gentlemen but simply to state the appreciation in which I hold a friend whom...
