RUST IN WHEAT. [Newspaper Article] — Warwick Examiner and Times — 28 December 1867

RUST IN WHEAT. The wheat of South Australia appears Dot to bo ell attacked by rust. The disease affects only some localities. Reliable information respecting it was obtained by a circular latter sent out from tlie Hegititr office. North of Adelaide the rust is general, and tbe crop is not expected to exceed from six to eight bushels per acre. Towards tbe north-east, where the sowing was later, tbe crops have suffered leaa, and the yield is estimated from 8 to IS bushels per acre. Dr. Meucke avers that experience convinces liim that rust only attacks wheat growing on land with too mucn salt in it. What amount of evidence this con clusion rests upon we do uot fcnnw But if this is so, tbe excuss of salt may be neutralised by artificial means. " Proper manuring and husbandry," says Dr. M., " good selection of healthy seed, and a correct method of picking the sjune, will never permit of the destruction by rust diseases to such an extent as we ex perience them now," Dr. Uaugban says, in a...

GYMPIE DIGGINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Warwick Examiner and Times — 28 December 1867

(GYMPIE DIGGINGS. The Maryborough Chronicle of the 20th instant says:- We have seen persons who left Nashville yesterday morning- All we can learn from   them of importance our correspondent's letter below has furnished. The diggings are in a most flourishing state. The new ground re-   cently rushed is turning out well, some fine nuggets being picked up there. The most sanguine expectations are indulged of the field proving something like what diggings used to be in the palmy days of gold mining in Victoria and New South Wales. A good deal of gold is now finding its way down, but nothing like what there would be if there were an escort.   We know ourselves of between six and seven   hundred ounces having arrived duriug the past   week. The population is constantly increasing   ing ; but few leave except to return.   Nashville, Mondny, December 16, Since my arrival here (six weeks ago) these d...
