Dr. Kesteven and the Umpire. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 26 September 1885

: ■— " » • Dr. Kesteveu and the Umpire. Dr. Leighton Kesteven lias, in my opinion, been very badly treated in his arbitration case with the Brisbane Municipal Council. He was the victim of a, buggy accident, caused by the; wilful negligence of the Corporation, m not having lights placed in a. part of the main street in the city,: which had been rendered unsafe for traffic, in consequence of operai tions conducted" tinder the sanction of the Council. He presented a claim of £3000 damages, and con sented to arbitration^ The and Arthur-Jffartin was called-in as umpire. Martin placed his&ward in a sealed envelope, and, before Dr. Kesteven could open the same, he had to pay down £160, as cost of arbitration. To his disgust and to public astonishment, the award, when brought to light, gave him the insignificant sum of £100, while both parties were adjudged to pay their own costs. This verdict condemned Dr. Kesteven to pay .£80 out of the then : kribwn arbitration costs and to rece...

Brisbane Boys' Grammar School. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 26 September 1885

Brisbane Boys' Grammar School. I bave received numerous letters concerning my last %Boys' Grarama^^cfc^&l.X'}are fr6m parents or relatives of b6;ys: who are pupils in the Brisbane G*amroar School. Each of them, without exceptiorJiia^bmmendatiryofthetenorofFiGAEo's article. it is clear,'to, me that ^jgaeo 'has given exact expression parents ^P«P»1bV: concerning the general adutf riisfcratitin—or, rather, maladministra tion—of the Brisbane Boys' Grammar School. The; only fault that the parents find with my last week's article, isth&t is was too mild--tbat it dealt far too leniently with evils that are very generally recognised?, as being jpilpably existent. It is, of course, Very grati fying to mejdhear that my only defect in this has been that I acted too mercifully with the persons and matters i'^nticised. I explained, last week, thel reason for this. I-kept all comments well within the mark, became I felt that I had only been Afforded an outsider's vifew of the posi...

Revolution in South Eastern Europe. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro and Punch — 26 September 1885

Revolution in South Eastern Europe. Turkey has got trouble again. A political revolu tion htfs been, effected in one of its dependent provinces, Eastern Roumelia,; which may re?open all those complications which European politicians Jkave been in the habit of referring generally to as :" The Eastern Question." Eastern Rou melia is one of the Balkan Provinces. At the celebrated Treaty of Berlin, signed at the close of the Russo-Turkisli war, ^ Eastern Roumelm ^ ^was created a semi-independent province, having its own Christian Governor-General, but bjeing ■ subject" to the military and political authority of the Sultan of Turkey. Its neighbour, Bulgaria, was created an independent principality, Prince Alexander of Batten berg being made its rider. Eastern Roumeliahas been long aspiring to be . free in ^eec^as wellas in name, and seems; to have sttdderily attempted to throw off theyokeof the M^suhiian Turk. On Sept. 20th, the Governor-<x6neral of Eastern Roumetia was seized...
