FIRE AT KIATA RAILWAY STATION. A fire occurred at the Kiafca rail way station late on Friday night, and resulted in part of the offioe fittings being destroyed, including the telegraph instrument and some papers. Fortunately the electric staff wa8 not interfered with. At present it is not known how the fire origi nated, but an official inquiry will bo held.

KAN IVA HEWS The triennial meeting of parents in connection with the State School was held in the Kaniva school last Monday evening. Mr Kyne, head teacher, occupied the chair. The following committee were elected :—Messrs W. II. Bond, G. Eastwood, A. Benn, W. Arthur Kelly, J. Hicks, E. Sharp, and T. W. Lee. At the closo of the meeting Mr W. H. Bond referred to the appointment of Mr Ivyne to the Traralgon school, and spoke in eulo gistic terms of Mr Kyne's capabilities as a teacher. Mr W. Arthur Kelly supported the remarks and expressed i-pgret at Mr Kyne's departure. Mr Kyne suitably responded. PERSONAL. Miss Furley, junior teacher of the local school, has succeeded in passing the second and first class junior teachers examinations held at Hor sham in December last. This is a very creditable performance consider ing her short period of service, which dates from March, 1913. Our Molbourne correspondent wired yesterday as follows:—There has been something almost approaching a collapse in the wheat market, which has boon only definitely apparent on Saturday. Buyers in town aro all standing oil', and the demand is poor generally. Thero aro now sellors of March wheat alongside at 3/91, and of April-May-Juno at 3/lOis. Prices of cargoes in London have de J preciatod to the extent of 9d a quarter in the week. Private cable messages from Liverpool report that the market is very weak, owing to the excellent crop news from North America, and to pres sure of North American sales. Liver pool futures closcd 3;iturday a cen tal lower for March, id lower for May, and 5^d lowor for July, The price of wheat at the Nhill mills yesterday, was 8/5 oats, 1/6.

IS) HILL TECHNICAL dCHOOL. A meeting of the committee of the Nhill Technical School was held on the 2nd inst,, and the following were present:—Messrs A F Magill (chair), W E Goldsworthy, J A Anderson, G E Dodd, and A E Turner (secretary and treasurer). The balance sheet was received and adopted, and showed a credit balance of L61 Os lid. A report was road by the director, showing that 38 students had re ceived tuition during the 3rd and 4th terms, and that there was a prospect of a further increase. The complete ! lists of the examination results are not yet to hand from the Education | Department, but the passes in those j known are good in comparison with other technical schools of the same standing. Mr Magill, who has been president of the school for the past 3 years, stated that he thought it only fair that some other gentloman should be given an opportunity of filling the position. Word was received in Nbill yester day that Roy, the bright little infant son'of Mr and Mrs W, Batson, had passed away at Portland. The child, who had been ailing for some time, was taken to the seaside by his mother, but despite all care and at tention, the little one gradually be came worse, and succumbed as stated. Much sympathy will go out to Mr and Mrs Batson in their eud bereave ment.

POISONED CAKE EATEN In returning a verdict of "Acciden tal death," after the inquiry at West Ham on Saturday, into the death of Albert Challingsworth, 18 months, who ate a piece of poisoned cake intended for rats, the jury (says "Lloyd's Weekly News" of January 18), sug gested that the sanitary authority should be informed of the occurrence. They warned the ratcatcher to be more careful how he left his cakes about in future. The baby's parents live in Cleaner road, Custom House, and the mother said that when she took the house about six months ago the place was infested with rats. She complained to the landlord, who sent a ratcatcher to the premises, and for a day or so everything was quiet. Then she saw a big rat run down the curtain when she came down in the morning. She again complained to the landlord, who sent some men to open the drains. After this the rats "all came in the kitchen," and on January 7 the rat catcher called again. For twenty-two years, according to "The British "Weekly", Canon Hawkins has been blind, but never has a man borne an affliction more bravely. He has never shirked any duty belonging: to his office, and with the years he had steadily grown in the breadth of his outlook on all public Questions. He has lived on the most cordial terms with his Free Chunch neighbors, and has done much to strengthen good feeling among all classes in the community. Ho was the head and front of most public movements, and his large charity will only bo discovered as the days show the need for timely help in vari ous directions.
