ELECTION ITEMS. [Newspaper Article] — The Raleigh Sun — 22 July 1898

ELECTION ITEMS. Two 'doses' of the Courier are promised before polling day. It is an insult to the electors to insinuate that a paper w:ll come out with statements — true or untrue — 011 tire the ore of polling day, when a man has no chance of replying, to influence the electors. W'e feel certain the electors will use their own judgment and not be led awav bv anv statements made deliberately to damage Mr. McLaughlin. This paper leaves the matter in the ham Is'of the electors with this issue, nnd is confident of the result-. Mr. McLaughlin was returned twice for the Upper Hunter, once by about 200 majority and the second time by nearly 500. Here signed in favor of Mr. Fitzgerald, because private business at the time .compelled it. Another lie about his only being once returned anywhere is therefore exploded. Rlr. McLaughlin was pretty strong in making his -'charges on the . Ifcrnmount and Bellingen platforms. He said that anyone could take any action they pleased with him. He was tel...

THE GENERAL ELECTION. MR. McLAUGHLIN'S CAMPAIGN. [Newspaper Article] — The Raleigh Sun — 22 July 1898

THE GENERAL ELECTION.! MR. MCLAUGHLIN'S CAMPAIGN. Mr. McLaughlin addressed big meetings at Upper and Lower Bncca, Coff's Harbor, and Raleigh last week. At 'Raleigh Mr. John Smith, J.P., occupied the chair, and ho had n good hearing. Mr. McLaughlin complained that persistent efforts had been made to misrepresent him in the electorate, and to injuve him by public statements to the effect ; that ho had not been able to get nioiioy ' bxpended in the district. He said that there had apparently been a conspiracy to prevent him getting money for necessary works, and now the electors wore asked to vote against hint 011 that account. He pointed out also that in one case in which he' had asked for money applied for by the Raleigh people for improving the 'North Beach Reserve, the matter had lieon reported against by Mr. H. A. Evans and Mr. F. I1. Mat thews. [This' report was published in a recent issue 'of The Sun.] Now, lie said Messrs. Matthews and Evans had explained through the Northern C...
