BOOLIGAL. -('PROM OtJB OWN CORRESPONDENT.) October 14. The promises of ail etirly stiitimer, which showed some three weeks ago, haVe entirely vanished, and we are now receiving God's blessing (rain) in abundances As I write this the rain is descending in i--v ? ? L_ ? J ? 1 ? ? X a ilrtr Aov for ftlA Iflfit fortnight; On Tuesday last a very heavy thunder storm) accompanied by rain and hail, passed over here, jthe hail was something extraordinary— it could be more properly cttlled a shower of ice the projectiles being no other than lumps of ice of irregular shape, and measuring from three to nine inches round. They continued to descend for fifteen minutes, and did consideiable damage to fruit trees, flowers, find, in several places, cutting down tbe grass— making the country look as if very largeflocks of sheep had been running over it. The rivet is very high and still rising.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE HAY STANDARD. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 16 October 1872

To the Editor of the Hat Standard. bm, — JNow that our noble bridge approaches com pletion, and our long expected raiilecium is looming large in the distance, it becomes a question of grave interest how «e are all to get on the bridge, and when or how we are to get over it. There are so many reports abroad of the intentions of the Govern ment that :t would be too tedious for one to enumer ate them, but there is one story so preposterous thnt it, uuiy ueeus exposure to cause lt to explode, it i* gravely stated that it is intended to cover the bridges with medallions of grief, in gold and bronze, and to ornament the parapets witb statuettes of Knth and Patience.- It is wonderful what people can be made to believe; I verily believe that if any wise looking man were to say that the Bridge were to be covereu with green cheese or Scotch porridge, there are some who would swallow the whole. What an absurdity to talk of putting plaster of Paris cake plates on the roadway of a bridge, and th...

MELBOURNE. October 11. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 16 October 1872

MELBOURNE. (FROM OltR OWN COftttESPOtfiJfiNT.) October 11. The Town and Country, a new weekly journal published here, among its numerous and well got-up information, contains an interesting statement respecting mining enterprise in the Bendigo district. It is very correctly said that mining speculators, in their pursuit of mammon, rush blindly into investments* and if they are disappointed, act quite as foolishly j in their endeavours to free themselves from j their liabilities, and although the district is for the present tabooed, there ;is actually as good prospects now as when the furore was created some few months back. During Mr Duffy's brief Ministerial exist ance he was accused of exercising his authority as Chief Secretary in such a peculiar manner that since then considerable comment has been made— but wirhout causing Mr Duffy to heed what was said about him. It was, however, left for the Argus to sting the leader of the Opposition into meeting, boldly, the charges made ftg...

The proportion in which certain varieties of the different crops are blended is obtained from a recipe in the possession of the Chinese Emperors which has been jealously guarded) fetid implicitly followed by these Eastern Potentates for centuries, and was first used by tbe Emperor ttOANGTL In later times so great has been the demdnd for these' Teas for the Russian market, that they ? have. beeti eagerly secured (frequently at immense prices); and forwarded by caravans through Asia, that t bey might reach their desiination without that injury to their fragrance it was thought exposure to sea air might occasion. Considerable difficulty stood in the way of the in* troducuon of these Teas to the Australian market* but at length a limited quantity for each year has been obtained.
