BRANDY CREEK RIACES. Once more we are called upon to chroniels the results of a race meeting hold in the Brandy Creek district, and in so doing we trust that the successful termination of the races on Boxing Day may lead to the es tablishment of apermanentelub. which will at least hold an annual meeting, and if pos sible spring and summer meetings. Horse racing has now become such a popular amusement that other enjoymentsare aban doned in its favor. The meeting on Boxing Day proved very successful, and the weather being cool and line a large number from all parts assembled to witness the various con tests, upwards of .400 being present during the dry. The course selected was in Mr. Brown's paddock, adjoining the Turf Club Hotel, and proved admirably adapted for the purpcsa~, as the whole of the race could be seen from start to finish. The entries for each race filled in well, and a great amount o: isterest was taken in each event. 'lhu duties of judlge devolved upon Mr. W. Wa:ker, w...

The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 6 January 1881

THURSDAY, JANUARY 6, 1881. Two advertisements appear in our issue this week, both connected with the public, and both marking the increase of popula tion and progress round Warrogul. The Wesleyans call for tenders for the erection of a place of worship, and the Church of England call a meeting to consider the ad visability of erecting a building for them selves. The one has all its difficulties over come; the other is only at the threshold of those difficulties. We see no reason why our fellow-townsmen who are Church men should not have a church for themselves, where the ritual peculiar to the Anglican Church could be carried out. It cannot be the money which would hinder, for if the members of the Church of England could not contribute or be responsible for £100 their credit is not worth much ; nor can we believe that carelessness with regard to their church will hold them back. We hope that many will be present to discuss the matter on Friday night. 'The present time we be lieve t...

THE PRESIDENT AND W. EDNEY, ESQ. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 13 January 1881

THE PRESIDENT AND W. EDNEY, ESQ. o We have been requested to publish the following letter from the President of the Bull Buln Shire to W. Edney Esq., who had undertaken to see him on behalf of the six western counncil lors, who have stopped the shire works. On Saturday last Mr. Edney made the proposal that one of the eastern coun cillors should give notice of a motion reflecting on Cr. Garside and the Pre sident. The western councillors would thereupon sign an agreement to allow the motion to be defeated, and would then go on with t'ie council's work. The President replied that if the west ern councillors really had a grievance they ought not to be satisfied with a piece of insincere acting like that pro posed by Mr. Edney; also that to re open the dispute in any way would be to revive bitter feeling. Subsequently lMr. Edney met him and told him that Cr. Hill would give the notice of mo tion. Upon which the President wrote the lette'r:- "To WALTER EDNET, Esq.--DrR Srn, Mr. Hill havi...

Hill, Gallagher, Garside and Irwin were present. lihere being no" quorum 'the President adjourned the meeting till 2 p.m. Again at 2 pm. no quorum was present, and the President was in the act of putting the adjournment of the meeting when the councillors entered in a body and.took their seats. Cr. Aflicek rose and made a personal ex planation in regard to the dispute between the western and eastern councillors, saying that he hadendeavored to form a committee to arrange matters, but that all his efforts were in vain. The President called on the secretary to read the minutes of previous meeting. Cr.. Fawcett desired to say a few weoris before the minutes were read. tHe had come that day to do thi work of the shire; he should act perfectly independent, and neither go on one side or the other. WHEAT GROWING IN THE BULN BULN DISTRICT. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 13 January 1881

WHEAT GROWING IN THE BULN BULN DISTRICT. The cultivation of wheat in the dis trict of Brandy Creek has not as yet been taken into serious consideration by the farming portion of the commu nity. Until very recently not even as much as an experiment of an acre has been made. This is munch to be re gretted, sceing that instead of making experiments at the present time for testing the capabilities of the soil and selecting those kinds of seed which would be most suitable to the district and best adapted to the climate, and dealing with the ravages of "rust," "smut" and "take-all," they should have been made long since; and at the present time we should be in a posi tion to know exactly what the results of two er three years' experience will teach us. We are called upon to al lude to this important subject-in an agricultural district--having been re quested to make a personal inspection of the first crop of wheat ever sown in the district. When we say the first crop we may be slightly in...

THE SEVERANCE MOVEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 13 January 1881

THE SEVERANCE MIOVEJMENT. Seeing the hopelesnuess of ever being able to come to an amicable arrange ment with the western councillors in regard to the present dispute, and ob serving that the Shire as at present constituted is wholly unworkable owing to the fact that the western councillors refuse to transact any busi ness-the six eastern councillors, at the conclusion of the abrupt termina tion of the last council meeting, met together and resolved upon immedi ately applying for severance. After considerable reflection on the present unsatisfactory position, the following circular letter was drawn up for dis tribution amongst the ratCpayers': "The councillors of the two eastern rid ings having attended two consecutive mieet ings of the Buln Buln Phire Council; at which the councillors of the two western ridings were present, and yet "refused to transact any bisiness," are now:comnpelled to apply for a shire to be formed-to be called the Shire of Warraguln-in order that the business...

MEETING AT DROUIN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 13 January 1881

MIEETING AT. DMOUIN. An indignation meeting (so called) was held at Drouin on Friday afternoon to dis cuss matters connected with the dead-lock in the Shire, Mr. Stephenson in the chair. There were 35 persons present, including four Councillors and six or eight Warragul people. Cr. Gardner made a very violent speech, full of exaggerations, and vulgar personali ties in reference to the President. He said he had just consulted the law officers of the Crown, and admitted that they refused to decide in his favor. Cr. Sutcliffe followed, and referring tohis conversation with the President on the Monday after the meeting, maintained that the meeting on the evening of the 26th No vember was a legal meeting. Mr. Dawes moved that a meeting of the ratopayers be held that day week, and that delegates from all parts of the Shire be in vited.-Mr. Murphy asked whether the de legates would be a court to try the Council, or whether they would have any power at all.-Cr. The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, JANUARY 13, 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 13 January 1881

THURISDAY, JANUAI Y 13, 1SS1. ArrIFFIs in the Shire Council of Buln Buln reached a climax at the last sit ting of that body on Friday, the 7th of January; and at such a critical juncture it may be wise to lay before the ratepavers of the shire a brief re sume of the whole cause of dispute. At the meeting of the council on the 26th of November last, the six eastern councillors left the council chamber shortly after six o'clock under the im pression that the meeting had been ad journed for a fortnight, in accordance with a resolution passed at a previous sitting of the council. Whatever the six remaining councillors may have understood in reference to the ad journment, a meeting was held by them on the same evening, Cr. HIleL, of the north-east riding, also taking part in the meeting. At the next meeting of the council, held on the 10th of December, a discussion arose as to the legality of the meeting held on the evening of the 20th November, which terminated in Cr. GimsimnE moving a ...
