TARCUTTA. [Newspaper Article] — The Tumut Advocate and Farmers & Settlers' Adviser — 27 October 1903

TARCUTTA. (From our own Correspondent.) The best season known! This is the reply of all our oldest residents, when spoken to anent the bountiful supply of grass and the fatness of stock. Rain makes its appearance weekly, consequently crops look luxurious. Shearing is progressing very'slowly, | owing to the broken weather. A basket social, in aid of the local cricket club, took place here about a week ago, and was numerously attended, over 50 couples being present. The food was supplied by the local " matresfamilias " and the music by Messrs. Sam and Steve Brown, E. J. Thompson and W. Cooper, whilst extras were played by Misses Crain,.Ingram and Fahey. It. was one of the most enjoyable dances ever held here, and at seven next morning, several remained, who were loth to leave. These country dancers are not greedy, but they like a lot. The duties of organizer, secretary and M.O. were carried out by Mr. W. T. Archer. A day's athletic Sports,. embracing a £7 10s Handicap will be held her...

LOOKING BACKWARDS. MEMORIES OF PAST CUPS. [Newspaper Article] — The Tumut Advocate and Farmers & Settlers' Adviser — 27 October 1903

LOOKING BACKWARDS. MEMORIES OF PAST CUPS. TBy Lk Gband.] The first Oup I have any distinc recollection of was Don Juan's in '78 and it caused :a bit of a sensation Don Juan ran first and Ettie Di Mestre's pair, Dagworth and Horatio followed him home. A protest was a once entered, on the grounds that thi Don was identical with another horse m fact said to be Don Giovanni, wh< was a year older. The settling wai held over for some days, and after thi taking of evidence in Adelaide, when the horse was bred, the verdict wa "not proven," and the judge's de cision was upheld. It was just at thi period Joe Thompson made bis entr; into the betting ring and afterward blossomed out into the leviathan o Australia. It was a treat to hear Jo calling the odds, with his brother Barney, Phin, and Jack assisting These brothers, by the way, were ver; clanish, and, while they were as fai as could be in their many dealings oi the turf, whole-hearted to a degrei and white men to the core, yet ...
