SUNSHINE AND DISTRICT - NEWS The Braybrook^ Council at its last meeting- went into committee, late in the afternoon to consider the application by Mr W J. An drew, C.E., secretary and engineer to the shire, for an increase in salary- After an animated discus sion, the motion to increase Mr An'drew's salary £50 was carried on the casting vote of the "Presi dent (Cr M'Kay). The opposi tionists were the north and south riding inembeis. The President submitted some interesting figures as an argument in favor of the proposal t'i increase the officer's salary. -Cr M Kay stated that in 1900 the shire's net revenue amounted to .£1791 ; in 1906. £2.006; 1907, £2046 ; 1908, £1958; 1909, £2188; 1910, £2968; 1911. .£4936; 1912, £3674; 1913, £3850; 1914, /6600. In 1900 the, expenditure totalled -£2202;- and increased until ill 1914, it -was estimated at £6623. "STEPHENS. 1 It la with deep regret that wo re cord tho death of Ex-Cr Jonathan : Stephens, which occured at his resi dence, 48 "Ballarat street, Yarraville on Saturday last, at tho age of 70. The deceased, who* highly esteemed in the district, leaves a grown-up family, to mourn their loss. Tho late Mr Stephens was a life-member of the V'arravillo Citizens' Club, of which he was one of the founders. The funeral took place to tfer Footscray Cementry on Tuesday. Mr Stephens was born in Cornwell in 184}. When ho was only 2 years . old his father was killed in a mine In 184.8, Mr Stephent, then a hoy. of four, cahio to South Australia with his .people, and his two eldest brothers went in for mining in tho Burra Hurra copper mines, and re mained there until 1852.
