HOW TO CLEAN GLOVES. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 19 August 1893

HO V. TO. CLEAN GLOVES. "The proper cleaning of gloves is a matter of considerable importance to women who are:not we:lthy and who like to wear pale shades in gloves. The Germans, always experts in nice economies, clean gloves in the most satisfactory manner. " I think the trouble," said a clever Berlin woman; when questioned on this point, " is that your English cleaners do not take time enough to do their work. Instead of rubbing the gloves with gasoline, as our cleaners do, they dip them in the fluid and wash them; or they saturate them with it. That is all wrong, iut it is quickly done. German women very often clean their own gloves, and they use the same methods as the glove cleaners. I'he gloves are stretched on -'wooden hands: and riibbed thoroughly in part with a pad of flannel dipped in gaso line. The cleaner is careful to take down ward strokes from the fingers to the wrist. The kid is rever saturated, but is moistened with the cleaning fluid, and as quickly as the flannel...

Arrival of the V.H.A. AT THE DRILL-ROOM, RUPERTSWOOD. WELCOME HOME. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 19 August 1893

Arrival of the V.HIA. AT THE DRILL-ROOM, RUPERTSWOOD. WELCOME HOME. The contingent of soldiers sent to England by Sir W. J. Clarke returned by the Arcadia on Wednesday, with their " blushing honours thick upon them," and were warmly welcomed. Five of the Sunbury men arrivel here by the 12.15 train the same day and a large number of residents were at the station to welcome them, On Thursday evening a grand concert, military display and ball, was given at the Rupertswood drill-room, in their honour, under the patronage of Sir William Clarke and family and a number of the military forces. The decorations of the room, which were due to the indefatigable energy of Sergeant-Major Webster, called for admiration, but stern space will not allow us to enter into detail. The proceedings began with a pianoforte and violin solo by Messrs Rawlins and Sctwaitz, which was followed by a clever single-stick combat between Sergeant Crisp and Gunner Shields. The B. Battery then gave an athletic display...

WOMEN THAT MEN PREFER. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 19 August 1893

SWOMEN THAT MEN PREPER. That a man likes beauty goes without say ping, as that a bee likes flowers. But as the bee only flutters-obout a flower which contains no honey-yielding property, so man only hcvers a brief time about the beauty without wit or charm. A. man likes a woman to be capable of .talking. well at times, but he does not care for the garrulous girl. He likes to.be:listened to himself, and ob-? jects to the girl. who monopolises the con. versation, almost as. much as the one who does not talk at all. .A ma lifke modesty, but he is disgnusted with mock ppzudry,. He sec~tly:4ikes a slighty unconventional girl, bgt he is so suasitive to public.c mment that he:is.afaid :to openly.show his likeing for her unless the is well grounded socially. And he is quick to censure if she defiies the proprieties, or violates absolute good form. A mari is utterly lacking in indepandence regarding these matters, and far more sensi tive to public opinion than the weaker sex. * However much ...

SUNBURY JUNIORS V. ST GEORGES' F. C. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 19 August 1893

StUN BURY JUXIORS V. S' GEORGES' F. C. The. match on Saturday last between, the above clubs caused a fair amnount of interest for the followers and supporters; of this manly game, and a goodly numth.r rolled up to witness the contest.. The. day was all that could be desised for the. pastime, old Sol shining pleasantly throughout the day, and only a slight wind blowing. The visitors were in fulM force, and it was the opinion of thespecta-. tors that the di,wning of our boys. was a dead moral. The Saints:appeared to, look upon the contest in, the same light, for immediately they arrived on the. ground. which was about half:an-hout. before time, they c-nmmenced what might. be termed a preliminary match between themselves so that when the match was~ started they were very much fatigued,. which left the Juniors an easy vic:ory.. A description of the game would, iindee& be difficult to give, as our boys completely. ran over the red and black. At quarter time the visitors were 1 go...

TRUE BEAUTY. [Newspaper Article] — Sunbury News and Bulla and Melton Advertiser — 19 August 1893

TRUE BEAUTY.. It has been-prettily s'id that- beauty is a key that opens every dloor ;.and many women are. so keenly alive to its value that they re sort to all sorts of exujedieats tb i:uprove on niggardly Natare's handiwork. Unhappily, they generally work on the wrong lines, and their last state is worse than their first. Lotions and face powders may .make a women appear attractive for a short time; but.in the end the delicate texture of her skin is ruined, and before she. has reached mid.le life she looks old and haggard, CAld.water.and a strict observance of the Iaws of health go further toward ensuring a fine complexion than: the costliest ". beautifier "ever put npon the market; .But beauty isnot confined' to the face alone ;,, the charm.of a graceful figure is even more. poteht., On meeting a:stranger, it is:the carriage, the general appearance which fi;st impresses us.
