In the straight Bomshell rushed to the front-find at the half distance Dandy was after him at a grunt pace, and stride by stride gained on Bombshell —who was tiring—he got up just in time to get the judges' verdict, winning by a nose. The owner of Bombshell waa. dis satisfied with the judges'- decision and insisted on .handing in a protest. For this indiscretion lie was fined in the sum of £5 by the stewards. i-There is no provision in the rules of- racing ad mitting of protests against the deci sions of judges, for Rule 137 says : 'The determination of a judge declar ing a horse to have won, or to be en titled to a place, shall be final.' The attempt to do so on the part of Bomb shell's owner was therefore most inju dicious and expensive. When Fred. Archer won the English Derby on Ormonde in 1886, he received £2,000.
