BARMEDMAN. January 31st. [Newspaper Article] — Temora Herald and Mining Journal — 6 February 1883

BAKNKHM! I.V. rraoM ous owtr oonRssronnKur.') January Slst. One of the principal topics here at present is ths faat that tlio Ada reof hns been cut in tlie big sbnft of the Ada O M. 0o., where Captain Mat thews is the manager. There is evidently a large body of stone, for miner* in unving wnir, mo iw. im-' : already passed through 8ft. of quart/.. | I have examined some of the stone, which shows gold in sundry places, j and the wages men helow continue to wash nroapect* on the shovol. The j importance of this to Barmodman can | hardly he estimated, and it is remark- ] able that the Captain's estimate as to j the cutting of the reef at AOft. should prove to be correct. The Fiery Cross has of late excited attention by the show of gold close to ths water, and No. 2 North Ada is said to bold it* own aa one of tho best claims on Bar medman- We are in the dark as to the profitable yield of the Fanny Park. ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE. THE SCHOOL OF ARTa. (TO TBI E9IZ0B Or TBI TBKOU BIB1U.) Sin, — Iu your issue of to-day is a letter signed ' A Member of the late Committee.' JUSTICES OF THE PEACE, GAMBLING. JUMPING, &c. (TO THE EDITOR OF THE TEMORA [?]) [Newspaper Article] — Temora Herald and Mining Journal — 6 February 1883

JUSTICES OF THE PEACE, GAMBLING. JUMPING, 4c. (TO TBE EMT0B Or XBfc TXlfOBJt HEM!..) Sib. — In your notices to correspon dents in last Tuesday's issue of the ' Herald,' you very courteously in formed me that you deolined to insert my letter, assigning a reason therefore ' that it was too personal.' You also added that the public have nothing to do with the fact of a man losing £50 on a Sunday night '? with the bones, then refusing to pay his landlord on a Monday.' I must at once admit that you are the proper judge of what may lead to legal trouble in the present state of the New South Wales law of libel ; but with all deferenoe to the editorial choir, I join issue with you on the latter point. I« it not of the utmost importanoe and consequence to the public weal that the aspirants for tho highest local and judicial offioss whioh tliey can look for in our immediate district, should be men above sus picion, and above the contempt of their fellows ; and not well-known gamblers, roues, ...

UNSEAWORTHY SHIPS. [Newspaper Article] — Temora Herald and Mining Journal — 9 February 1883

TJNSEAWOKTUT SHIPS. The action of the Marine Bnard in prosecuting Arthur E. Kendall, a shipping agent, for sending tin'1 pliip ' Nemesis 1 to sea in a condition by which tbe lives of the nnssengers were endangered, is an evidence that the stringent provisions made for thr- safety of passengers and crews in this respect are not any longer to lie allowed to remain a dead letter. The law is stringent enough, but no one ever dreamt of putting it in force. Olid the most fatal consequences have i'eeulted from this remissness as in the case of the 'Woniora disaster, mid numbera of other similar cases. The penalty for loading a vessel so as to ' immerse her below the safety line or 5or sending lier to sea in an nn sea- worthy .condition eo that the lives of the passengers are endangered, incurs I a penalty of £1000. or imprisoned ] with hard labour for a term not exceeding three years. Notwith standing this, vessels are sent to sea overladen, and otherwise in an unsafe condition Passerger s...
