Hebrew Melodies at Balmoral. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 21 January 1898

Hebrew Melodies at Balmoral. The Jewish Chronicle gives the following details in explanation of the announcement in a late 'Court circular' that the opening voluntary at the memorial service for the late Duchess of Teck, which Her Majesty the Queen attended, was a 'Hebrew Melody — Memorial of the Departed.' This melody was the beautiful and pathetic chant, sometimes bnwn n,s the ' Chant of the Dead,' which in parts of Germany and Poland is sung by the . Cohanim during the ' Duchan ' on the last dayd of the festivals, when the 'Memorial of the Departed ' is recited. The voluntary was played from the volume of ' Hebrew Melodies' arranged by Professor PaueL\ with the co operation of the Rev. Franci-j Cohen, and pub lished by Messrs. Augener. These examples of the ' Chazonuth ' appear to have appealed to Her Majesty's musical taste, as during the Queen's stay at Balmoral this autumn some seven or eight numbers of the same compilation ' have been played by the organist at Her Majesty's- ...

New York Elections. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 21 January 1898

New York Elections. In the Lity of New York, with its Jewish population of' nearly 400,000, the so-called 'Jewish Vote ' is a matter of no little conse quence, and although strenuous efforts are made at each election to obliterate all religious and racial lines, they do determine many a vote. In a measure, the politicians are re sponsible for this. They play upon the suscep tibilities of our people, and quietly spread the report that this or that orgairsation, that this or that candidate is unfavourably disposed toward the Jews. It will, therefore, not sur prise you to hear that during the late Municipal elections the .Board of Jewish Ministers issued the following public warning :— Whereas, it has been brought to our notice that race pa.'sion and religious sectarianism,. have been appealed to in this municipal camp: in, Therefore, we would remind our brethren of the necessity. of absolutely ignoring religious affiliation in choosing candidates for civil oSices at this as at any fut...

The Proposed Presentation to the late Lord Mayor. The movement which was initiated to pre sent the ex-Lord Mayor, Sir Faudell Phillips, with a portrait of himself painted by Mr. Solomon J. A letter to the Jewish World by Mt. E. Mendelssohn is reprinted in another column. This is consider.ee! necessary, a& a Melbourne evening' newspaper has also published it, and thereby a gross untruth may receive a little credence. We fail to understand the. motive of the at ack on the Jewish girls of Australasia — for a' motive must exist for such a silly attempt at a libel. Undertaking an analysis of the subject leaves an impression that during the thirty- two years' experience Mr. Mendelssohn claims he must have attempted to win the favor of one or more of these Jewish girls, and they had the good judgment to reject his advances ; because the man. who would make use of such words as ' I make the positive statement that the majority of the Jewish girls in Australia, while most amiable, attractive, and educated, do not know how to cook a potato,' leaves this impression, and also that he must have been a most undesirable ' young man,' and is capable of many things beyond the ...

Bathing and Boating Accidents. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 21 January 1898

Bathing and Boating Accidents. As usual during the late holidays there were many boating and bathing accidents. It is painful to read the records of such catastrophes. How dire must be the affliction of the bereaved relations ! Such accidents will happen, but would they not be less frequent if people were a little more thoughtful and prudent ? No one who is not an expert swimmer should go into a boat unless it is under the control of a capable boatman. It is lamentable to see persons in boats which are being pulled and steered by youkig men who would be helpless in case of an rmforseen difficulty. Young men who have very little practice on the water, ought not to risk their friend's lives. In case of fatal acci Amni- -i-Vir,-ST o vtn TV-/-vva lltr +.VirYn fvVt Yl nt IP.O'n.llv. guilty of manslaughter. The Lord Chancellor on Palestine and Persecution. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 21 January 1898

The Lord Chancellor on Palestine and Persecution. The Lord Cbancoller opened an exhibition at the Toynbee Hall, Oxford last month in aid of the building fund of the Mission Hospital for Sick Jews at Jerusalem. He said one could Hot help feeling that, besides being themselves a standing miracle in the world's history, the d ews must be to a Christian nation ever a most interesting object, and he supposed no one could imagine a more pitiable object that a destitute Jew in Jerusalem. He believed, in respect of this particular hospital, that it was the first of those missions that had been sent abroad, although nofc-now, of course, the only one, and a very little knowledge of what was £oing on in Palestine and Judea generally Would convince anyone that it was needed. There were, he was told, no fewer than 40,000 to 45,000 Jews at this moment in Jerusalem, the whole population being only 60,000. What their occupations were and how they lived he had endeavoured to ascertain, but he believ...

LIFE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 21 January 1898

LIFE. Life is a prayer., if lived aright. And troubles viewed beneath God's light Are beautiful and bright, Life is a song, if filled with praise, And discords that be it ways, Enncbleajl our clays. - ' Life too is light, if only we. The lining of the clouds will see, And bright reflectors be. Life is a test : each care, each joy, Each heavy burden that we bear, Mouldeth our character. Each sad experience that we gain. Each thrill of joy, each throb of pain, Nc one is s jnt in vain, And life is art ; all art lies there ; The art of living comes by prayer And earnest, watchful care. Ah ! Life is mystery. The faded colours that we see We trust one day will brighter bs ; Tho' raindrops fall upon the ground. See how they sparkle all around. By radiant sunlight crowned ! The winds may howl, the storms may rise, And bitter tears start to our eyes ; Yet always God is wise. Life is a love ; if all we do, And say, and think, is good and true, And God will help us through. There is a pleasure...

The Family Circle. TEACH YOUR CHILD OBEDIENCE. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 21 January 1898

The Family Circle. TEACH YOUR CHILD OBEDIENCE. Dr Bushnell said that the impressions made during the first five years of a child's life were more permanent and consequential than any subsequently made. This period of the greatest influence is in many cases tha5:. of the greatest neglect. The primary lesson of self-control in respect for authority, and obedience, nromDi; and unquestioning, to law, is unlikely* to be begun or learned later, if untaught in these plastic years. The uncontrolled pupil graduates from the family into the school,, and then the troubles comes. ? The old Jewish family was doubtless too aus tere in discipline. Modern families are in danger for lack of a wholesome and necessary correction. An education in which there is no punishment is unnatural. ' Infinite pity,' said Carlyle, ' and yet infinite rigour of law ; it is so Nature is m*de ' The child is wronged who is educated for such a world without learning this from his earliest years. The Heavenly Father aid...

Colonial Jewesses. CAN THEY COOK POTATOES? [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 21 January 1898

Colonial Jewesses. CAN THEY COOK POTATOES? Mr. E. MendelssohD writes to the ' Jewish World ' as follows : — T ' The recent discussion between Dr. Abrahams and the Melbourne Hebrew congregation on the question of proselytism, as published in your issue of the 1 2th November, brings to my mind the old trouble in Melbourne and other colonial Jewish communities, a trouble which must, and will, recur through the want of wisdom among Jews themselves. It is a most serious subject, and one whereof the remedy lies'in the bands of our colonial co-religionists themselves. Briefly the caee is this. The parents of the Jewish girls find their young men seek Chris tian girls for their wives instead of Jewish maidens, and, after marriage, make their wives Jewesses, so as to bring up their progeny according to our ancient faith. As a natural consequence very many of the Jewish girls remain unmarried, or, as in some case3, seek Christians for their husbands. To remedy this, the members of the Melbour...
