Mallee Shoots. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 23 October 1914

? ?]a tee Shoots. -.. A corresp.udcient asked the De .partment of Agriculture in South Australia :-- . What is the best time of the year to cut mallee shoots ? 2. In cuttinz them is it better to cut right down or slash only about two-thirds off? Does? the continual slashing finally kill the shoots, and what is the average period taken to kill same ? The questions were referred to Mr L. S. Davie, manager of the Experi WeLntal Farm, Veitch's Well, who replies in the locai " ournal ,of A±riculture ' 1. The greatest check to maliee shoots is given if they are cut be tween harvest and seeding. If this is done in January, and early in February, the shoots may be fire raked, but if rot carried out. till later they would have to be horse raked, and burnt in rows. It is necessary to burn the shoots if cut before seeding, or otherwise they will bioek the implements, and afterwards make it impossible to seed evenly. TO THE EDITOR OF OUYEN MAIL. [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 23 October 1914

TO THE EDrITo O OOUVEN MAIL. SIR,-Seeing that no supporter of the Ouyen Football Club has commented on the unsportsmanlike act;on of that body in holding its wind-up social in the public hall, I crave space to do so. After the generous donation of .£10 to the Association and L1 1/ to each in dividual club by Mr F. Waters, of the Ouyen Hotel, it wotuid have, only been fair for the premier team; to have held its final social on his` premises and allowed him to de rive what little benefit was to be' gained. Apart from that, a matteri of courtesy and recognition of hisi support of the Association should have been sufficicut reason. Ac tions like this by-sporting bodies soon lose them the support that is needed to carry them through.- Yours, etc.. TIM~ EROO.

Drought-Resisting Wheat [Newspaper Article] — Ouyen Mail and Central Mallee Advertiser — 23 October 1914

Drought-Resisting Wheat A Dunmunkle cot respondent to the Minyip " Guardian " writes : " MIr T- Eime has 24 acres or King's Red (a bearded wheat) under crop. It is growing on a': loose, black flat, looks well, and displays splendid drought-resi-tiig (qualities. It is IS inches to 2 feet, high, well out in ear, and proiisses to yield two or three bags per acre. Mir Eimn procured two bags of seed from Balaclava (S.A.). Last y"ear he sowed eight acres of this wheat, w-hiclh yielded o bags per acre. and its milling qualities vwere highly spoken of by the manager of the Minvip flour mill. This -car it certainl' shows up in striking contrast to Federation A. hPat, which, though sown along side in the same paddock, has almost withered away. V andilla King is another hardy variety, sown in the same paddock, under the same conditions. It will be well worth stripping. It is in dry years like the present that bring out qualities in wheat which lie dormant or are unnoticed in nor mnal years. Ou...

-0- [From "Wednesday's " Herald."J Strengthened by the Allies, the Belgians Ihave a,,-iin: attacked the Germans at vario::t points on the Yser River. So for the (Germa:: o'-)' n 'u ghts on the front between Niuport and Dixmude have been vitiout e.; fective results. and their nright at tacks ehlewhere have been re-! pulsed. The British naval guns are doing effective work by dislodging the Germar.s from the Belgium coastal towns. One German brigade was: annihilated on the march. It is expected that the seat of the Government of France, which is at present at Bordeaux, will be trans ferrnd to Paris in November. New British guns are destroying German aeroplanes and terrifying the enemy's aviators. Supreme control of the Austro German armies has been taken by the Kaiser. Success continues to mark Russia's operations against the Austro-German armies on the Vis tula. Near Radom the Czar's troops took many prisoners and guns, and on the San River they have driven the enemy back.
