EDEN, TWOFOLD BAY. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 4 August 1866

EDEN, TWOFOLD BAY. (FkOM OffR' CORRESPQNDKNT.)^ We have bad a little better weather during the past week, and all bids fair for a very bountiful harvest.. About this time Jast year there was scareely a green leaf, to be seen,; and all hearts were heavy while Providence withheld the blessing of rain. Now we have abundance and eyery prospect that the forthcoming seasons will yield their golden fruits with a lavish hand. Let us therefore be thankful and not forget Him who has both, the power to\x=req-\ give and the power to take away. ! Our whaling parties have at last been successful! On. Wednesday last Mt. Davidson's party secured the first of; the season,—a very fine whale I believe, but a great part wbb devoured by the Killers. Yesterday -Mr. Solomon's party secured a fine right.whale, and, of course,, .give it all sorts of dimensions. Be it large or 6tnall> we are nevertheless pleased that the poor men engaged will: not thus have their labour in vaim and leave Eden* as empty as...

TARTHRA JETTY. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 4 August 1866

TARTHRA JETTY. "Wo have on several occasions called attention to tlie very insecure state of Tarthra jetty; we also suggested to tbe committee appointed at the public meeting, the necessity of taking immediate steps to sccure it; but it appears that nothing has been, as yet, done to save the tottering structure—nor until some accident, occurs, or the inhabitants individually suffer in pocket by the loss of a few tons of produce, will they rouse themselves from their constitutional apathy. Truly we are more' like a community of opium-eaters living in dream-land, investing Tarthra with all the security and advantages of a Port Jaekson, but without the energy even to inflict "four saw cuts" to save the jetty from destruction. The following letters are from Captain Sergeant, storekeeper at Tarthra, and James Manning, Esq., of Panbula; the first shewing the dilapidated state of the wharf, and the other offering to assist the exertions of theinhabitants by pecuniary aid : . " Tarthra, Jul...

STICKING UP OF THE A. J. S. BANK, TENTERFIELD. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 4 August 1866

STICKING UP OF THE A. J. S. BANK, TENTER- ( FIELD. f The Tenterfield Correspondent of the Armidale Telegraph writes as follows: The event so long predicted lias at last occurred. On tlie evening of Wednesday, July 11th, about 8 o'clock, the Joint Stock Bank was entered by four armed men, who, but for one fortunate circumstance, would have succeeded in committing a most extensive robbery. Everything was in their favour : the night was dark and wet, the manager of tire bank and his assistants were not just then expecting an attack, and consequently were in a measure unprepared to offer resistance; but the robbers were j nevertheless obliged to beat a hasty retreat without accomplishing their object. The facts are these : Mr. Martin, the manager of the bank, and Afr. Nathan, the accountant, were sitting at the tea table when they heard heavy footsteps in the passage leading to the room from the backdoor, and almost immediately four masked ruffians entered, and, presenting their revolve...

The Bega Gazette. "Quod petis hic est." SATURDAY, AUGUST 4, 1866. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 4 August 1866

" Quod potis hie est." SATURDAY, AUGUST 4,1SGG. The question of roads in this district is one of the most perplexing problems that ' any individual ever undertook to solve, in consequence of the diversity of opinion; and this difference is owing.to the narrow ideas which the people entertain on the subject. The generality of the inhabitants estimate the importance and necessity of a proposed or existing line of road just according as it personally benefits them\x=req-\ selve*. They seem (when the subject of roads is brought before them) unable to comprehend the nature of a general benefit} Bach individual only views the subject in the light of how it will affect his own immediate interests. Thus we have, at this present moment, as many lines of road as there atfe opinions on the subject; and yet there is not a single one of them even passable, and the small sums of money that hav^ been periodically granted to this district (in the aggregate a very large amount) has been literally wa...

(TO THE EDITOlt Of' THE. "BKGA. GAZETTE.") Sin,—In endeavouring to achieve notoriety there is an\x=req-\ error many individuals, more espeoially those who ar« utterly incapable of attaining that end, place a great dekl of dependence in, and by so doing invariably come to grief, and therefore fail to satisfy their ambitionthat, is Chalice, or, in other words, trusting to Bate. Such, was the opinion.I formed*on reading Mr, Berne's letter, which appeared in your last issue, in answer to\x=req-\ mine of the 21st ulfc, and was unmistakeably con\x=req-\ firmedby his unprecedented conduct at that memorable meeting held imthe Court-house on {he July last. To monopolise- yeu^^j&iaKte- epaoe in- criticising his\x=req-\ macaroiucJett®r.is quite unnecessary, therefore I shall' confine myself to one or two portions of it,.and leave your readers to draw their own inferences. I shail first refer to that portion of his letter where he says, " Does he think, I say, that because such a societ...

The Bega Gazette. "Quod petis hi[?] est." SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 1866. [Newspaper Article] — The Bega Gazette and Eden District or Southern Coast Advertiser — 11 August 1866

Ctjc Bccja #ajette. "Quodpetishie est." SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 1800. The decision of the Bench in the case of Police v. Gowing has created considerable surprise, and called forth no small amount of comment. Of itself, the case possesses no very distinctive features—misunder\x=req-\ standings, disputes, and reprisals respecting ownership—being of daily occurrence in these colonies between neighbouring farmers. But this case has been invested with more than usual interest, by the extraordinary and, we may safely say, unprecedented proceedings which have characterized it by, and in,its frequent adjournments. The circumstances out ot which the case arose and the parties involved in it, we shall as briefly as possible indicate. Mr. Oowing, a highly respectable man, of many years standing, and, perhaps, the largest agricultural farmer in the district, is a near .neighbour to Messrs. Allan and Woods, each hitherto regarded as equally respectable, and farming to a large extent. Each of these ...
