LIGHT WEIGHT BREAD. TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 1 October 1891

LIGHT WEIGHT BREAD. TO THE EDITOR OF TiE HRO.NIoCLE Sm,--I would like to direct your attention to an able article which appeared in the Melbourne lHerald of the 22nd inst, calling attention to the discrepancies in the weight of bread in and around the metropolis. Your contemporary suggests that the law should be put in motion against the offenders, stat ing that the l?akers' and Millers' Act pro. iades a penalty for their refusal to weigh, and also for using improper weights and acales. Well, Sir, in my. opinion, the law should be put in force everywhere as well as in Melbourne and Greater Melbourne. If I, or any other poor man, pay for two pounds of bread, I have a right to get two pounds solid weight, not "anything between 24 and 25 ounces," which the Jlraid states is the eneral practice. It is time the Yea Shire Council and other local bodies pat -the law in motion, as the Herald states they have full power to do it. I will not go into any details, and at present will content mys...

MATCHETT'S LANE CONTRACT. TO THE EDITOR OF THE CHRONICLE. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 1 October 1891

MATCHETTS LANE CONTRACT. T0 THE EDroa OP THIE CU ONICLE. Sum,-Wishing to ask you for a small space in your valuable paper re Matchett'a L?ne Contract,.in reply toJ. C. Draper, I wish to inform Mr. Draper that I went by in structions from Mr. Stesart, the late En gineer, aas Mr. Steuart had been over the road when the grubbing ias 'finished, and was quite satisfied with the work until I made a complaint of Draper having men fencing and felling trees and leaving them on the road. I came to 3[r. Steuart, and told him I wrote-'to letters in June and July to the Council, but there was no word of them. It is a wonder M r. Draper hneer said anything about this before, but it is'ari old saying, "Blood is thicker than water." Or was he wanting me to clear all the timber fallen by the fencers! Msr. Draper "must remember, if the work is badly laid off, it is no fault of the contractors.-I am, be., , W. . COLLINS. SFlowerdale, September 23.

YEA R.C. PRESBYTERY. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 1 October 1891

YEA R.C. PRESBYTERY. Mn. J. BrGcY is putting the finishing" touches on the Presbytery which the Roman Catholics are aboutto present to the Rev. Father Brady, and expects to be quite finished next week. It is a most comfortable villa, reflecting the highest credit on both the builder and architects, the latter being the well-known firm of Kempson,. Connolly, and Oldham. There is nothing of the bride. cake style of architecture about it, and it is quite evident that the money has been wisely, not lavishly, expended. A special feature is the ventilation, and those who may be thinking of building might, with adva?n tage to themselves, pay Father Brady's handsome residence a visit before they finally decide on their plans. In addition to the. ceiling centre-flawera, there are four esde ventilators in the dr.ring-room, and these can be opened or closnl by simply pulling a cord, weighted at the end with lead. All: through the building there are these side ventilators, and each room will ha...

THE LIBRARY BALL. PRESENTATION TO MR. J. MACDONALD, C.E. [Newspaper Article] — Yea Chronicle — 1 October 1891

PRESENTATION TO MR. J. . MAC DONALD, C.E. THE annual Library Ball; which: took place on Thursday last, though not so numerously attended as it was last year, proved a very great success , and those who were present enjoyed themselves thoroughly, all agreeing that it was one of the pleasantest of the many pleasant reunions that have recently been held in the district. The ball com mittee, consisting of the President (Mr. Scale), the Hon. Secretary (Mr. Wilson), Dr. Lang, and Mr. Wild, spared no effort to ensure the comfort of everybody, and visitors were well looked after. Several ladies came from Melbourne and Alexandra, and expressed themselves highly pleased with the general arrangements. The ball rooil was prettily decorated, some of the dresses were really halndomc, the floor was in good order, and as th. night was perfect. the dances went on merrily till 4 o'clock in the morning. At about midnight an adjournment was made to the supper-room, and after iefresh ments (which wereli...
