Blunders of the Present Government. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 25 April 1879

Blunders of -the Present Government. The end of recess is rapidly approach ing now and that alone under present ?cirenmstaucra is a uaaXtcr for rejolofllg which would be the greater if there were any corfcainty that with the le asseinbliiig of Pavlianieat the present Government would be out voted. We should have been glad to have seen them defeated during hist session so that they might not have been allowed the opportunity for wrong afforded by an unchecked recess, and their actions sinc« have one by one strengthened our opposition to them. 'We have not space to enumerate all their errors but feel obliged to draw attention to one or two of the greater while we mention also their Litest mistake ; that of the past few days, of stopping further immigration. Individually the erring men have been the Treasurer and the Minister of Education. The former took office amid an almost universal feeling that he was no financier, and that though in many positions he might have assisted any Minis...

Tonics. Few measures passed last session have gaiued for themselves such universal condemnation as the Brands Act which is gazetted to come into force on Mav 1st next but it ever we were troubled by over legislation it is now. The Act will not gain the end foiv-which ifc was intended and if carried out would be a hardship not only1- to stockholders but also to cattle. An ^nimq] that is per haps bought and sold soni'e half dozen j times a year would soon have no room on it for fresh brands if every successive owner possessed a brand of his own, and if one person can get another to brand his stock for him without having a registered mark of his own, the Act beeomes largely a dead letter. Many arguments could be adduced against the Act but as we understand that an organ ised effort is about to be made to obtain its repeal, and as we anticipate that there will be but very little difficulty in doing this' it is not now necessary to say more. We seem no nearar-©b talking1 a water suppjy. ...

I was going into TraTal gar Square, where the National Gallery of Trictares is, mother, and there is a cab stand in the street, and there was a cabman standing there, munching at a lamp of dry bread that he oat with a jackkuife. 1 njver saw a cabman do that before ; I should bare been lens surprised if he had been having a chicken and a bottle of port. However, in front of this big cabman this little cbao 'I have brought with me was standing ; quite in rags ; bo shoes on bis feet, no cap on his wild hair ; a%d be was looking fixedly at the big lamp of bread. I never saw any animal look so starred ann bo hungry; his eyes were quite glased with the fascination of seeing the man ploughing away at thie lump of loaf. And I never raw any child notion. His bands were like the claws of ? bird; and Ilia trousers were sho-t and torn 6O t.hst you could see his legs weie like two pipe* ?terns. At last...

Up to the present time farmers hire been shaking in their phors, and many who had sown early have had to repeat, the operation ; I fancy that there has been a disposition to get the seed in early end hence the disappointment. There docs not -seem to have been any real cause for fear, simply the season wps rather late and the long -spell of drought hundred ordinary farming operation*, and little fallowing has con sequently been done, l.his beautiful change will no doubt have an encouraging effect.
