GRASS FIRE AT SPECI MEN HILL.. i- .'Between •; (0 and 11 o'clock on Thursday. morning, a grass fire, evi dently started by^ some cvil-diSposed person, occurred . at Specimen Hill: rt..was first noticed 'burning liercely on the property of - Mr Miles Wood burn, of Jubilee Lake,, It travelled through the scrub, across a few chains of Crown land, and then en tered the property of Mr Quiun. It passed into Mr James Matheson's holding1, where it burned a consi derable extent of fencing, some heaps of posts and rails; and swept through • 12 acres of grass land. U was gt>ing' strongly at about 6 in the evening, and the probabilities were imminent tha'li it would travel on and destroy the homesteads of Messrs Richardson and Trotter. Fortunately rain began to fall, and this enabled those who were lighting the llame* to get them under control and prevent their further progress.

STORE DESTROYED Fire on Saturday night destroyed the oombined butober's shop and general Btore standing at the ooroer of Blue . Mountain and Spring Hill roada at Tylden, It was a relio of the early days, having been bnilt and opened in 1859 by MeaerB Getrge and John Glenn, The Btook was large, 83 the loss was great. Ibe heat was to muob for the alleged fireproof safe, paper money and ledgers qeing reduoed to tinders. On'Mr George Glenn's leaviog for New JieaUnd his interest was par— ohaced by the late Mr Thomas AnderBon Ewiug. Later the late Mr John Glenn sold bis share to Mr W. P. Wright-, and for many years the business was oonduoted under tbe style of Ewing aod Wrigbt. Later it paBBed again into tbe handB of Mr John Glenn, and was hafierwatdB- taken ovea and Bnooessfully aonduoled by Mr W. J. Anderson Tbe plaae was looted np as usual on Saturday night. Ibe oausB of tbe outbreak is unknown. The bnilding was insured in tbe Derwenb and Tamar Company. Tbe stook waB a!so ineured.
