The Tinky Winky stink continues [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

The Tinky Winky stink continues By Lisa de Moraes, The Washington Post Jerry Falwell is making babies cry, and the mayor of West Hollywood, Calif., is hopping mad. Mayor Steven Martin, whose city council has a homosexual majority, is angry about Falwell's assertion that Tinky Winky, a character in PBS's "Teletubbies" show, is gay. Martin said Falwell "has singlehandedly crushed the hearts of many children by viciously casting Tinky Winky into a sexual controversy. It's embarrassing that Falwell is so obsessed with gay issues that he forced the discussion of Tinky Winky's sexuality upon parents and their children." But Falwell seems to think keeping children from their favorite TV character is a small price to pay for spreading the gospel. "Who would ever have predicted that the little parental warning in the February issue of the (National Liberty) Journal would open such a world of opportunity to share the eternal Hope of Christ?" the religious right leader said in his "Fal...

Website of the week [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Website of the week by Jon Stubbs features editor The world of digital music on the internet is constantly changing, and so are the methods of acquiring it is as well. A few issues back the Behrend Beacon brought you www.palavista.com, which, at the time, was a great search engine for MP3's. However, it crashed often and had many dead links. Well, with necessity being the father of invention, the World Wide Web brings us www.audiogalaxy.com. Unlike Palavista, Audiogalaxy searches for the song one wants quickly, without constantly bom barding the user with advertisements for porno sites. In addition, Audiogalaxy tells the user if a certain site is a ratio site or not, which is very useful. Palavista simply led the surfer to an "Error 401" page. Another advantage of Audiogalaxy over Palavista is a percentage rating of the chance of the site being open. This makes it easier to weed out the bad pages from the useful ones. Audiogalaxy also gives the ftp ad dress so the user can...

The Outback steakhouse: Erie s newest & greatest restaurant [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

The Outback steakhouse: Erie s newest & greatest restaurant by Roger Burlingame staff writer There is a new restaurant in Erie this year, called The Outback (Millcreek Mall Pavilion). This restaurant is part of a chain of Australian-style steakhouses. I had heard that they made a wonderful steak, and 1 heard right. Pittsbujgh was the closest we were to one, until now, so I just had to go check it out. 1 called for reservations, but The Outback doesn't accept reservations. When my date and I arrived on the scene, there was a forty-five minute wait; also, the hostess informed me that this was usually the case on any given night. Wei! a little wait isn't such a tragedy, because we could just spend it in (he bar. and enjoy an appetizer and a drink. The atmosphere at The Outback is very friendly, everything is done in a nice dark wood. The entire restaurant is full of Australian knick-knacks, and on the walls are beautiful pictures of Australian landscap...

Out of Bounds Tyson destroying sport of boxing [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 18 February 1999

Out of Bounds Tyson destroying sport of boxing JASON SNYDER In the dying sport of boxing, what could possibly make the once respected boxing ring nothing more than a free for all with ropes? One man...Mike Tyson. We all know of Tyson's past troubles with the law. We all know of his ear-biting incident. We all know that he is supposedly "sane." And we all know he keeps coming back. But there are new developments with the progress (I call it progress because the boxing world continues to use his screwups to promote the sport) of Tyson Once again, Tyson has found himself in prison. And once again, the boxing world doesn't care. Tyson was sentenced to one year in prison for assaulting two motorists after a three-car accident late last August. This incident has since brought up questions of whether or not he violated his probation from his 1991 rape conviction. Despite all these questions, Tyson still might get permission to fight during his prison sentence. Yes, this crimina...

Know Your Lions... # 43 Jen O'Lare Women's Basketball by Jessica Tucci associate editor Jen O'Lare may just be a sophomore, but she is a serious contributor to the Behrend women's basketball success. Offensively, she has been the leading rebounder in the last eight games and is averaging 12 points per game. Her rebounding average is 6.5 rebounds per game. O'Lare also contributes 2.1 assists per game. Defensively she adds 1.4 steals per game. Coach Fornari believes that O'Lare has greatly improved from last year, and is pleased that O'Lare could step into a starting role as a sophomore. "The team relies on her more and more as a go-to player," says Fornari. Fornari concluded by saying, "She does whatever we ask her to in every game." As for O'Lare herself, she believes that the team has a bright future, and states, "we push each other to become better players by competing strongly against one another." O'Lare chases a loose ball. photo by Jason Blake
