Cwf ^ p ^ O ¦ 7 • ^^ ^ PRETTY CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO BE MADE AT HOME . The month of December is usually so full of Yuletide preparations that little time remains for thoughts of the wardrobe , except as it bears upon the subject of Christmas giving . There are so many articles of apparel which prove excellent gifts that the practical minded are glad of suggestions for these useful things . One girl is making embroidered belts out of some linen which she had left over from last year . These are about lj ^ to 2 inches wide and embroidered at center back with some simple but effective design . The latter can be drawn on the linen by anyone , using a flower or several leaves or a few dots artistically arranged and worked solid with mercerized cotton . The front is finished with a small pearl buckle which comes at 15 cents or 25 cents . Small eyelets are worked in the pointed end and a small buttonhole is made in the other end far enough from the end to allow * he edge to be slipped through ...

1 mwm [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 December 1906

1 mwm POULTRY DOTS . Keep a box of charcoal where the fowls can reach it at all times . It is one of the best aids to good digestion . If you burn wood you can sift sufficient charcoal from the ashes . Remember that in winter the fowls do not get green grass or other fresh vegetable food . As this is necessary for their health and productiveness do not fail to lay in a supply of cabbage , mangel wurzels , etc ., to last the fowls until spring . Keep the poultry houses open as much as possible during late fall . Too early closing of the building shuts off the supply of good air and the oxygen it contains and makes the fowls less able to withstand the low temperatures of the coming winter . If any of your fowls show a roughness of the shanks , witli a substance Having a mealy appearance beneath the scales , causing the scales to stand out , they have what is known as scaly leg . The shanks should be washed thoroughly with soap and water and then anointed with carbolic vaseline . If th...

fMlhty [Newspaper Article] — Farmer's Wife — 1 December 1906

fMlhty WHAT WE SAW AT THE STATE FARM . About a hour s drive from our place —a little less by the trolley car—is the Minnesota State Agricultural Experiment Station , a place that had I stumbled on it thirty years ago would have surpassed in my farm-boy mind all the storied spots I had ever heard of from the Garden of Eden to Barnurn s circus . And in spite of ail the more wonderful things I have seen since boyhood days , this experimental farm draws me perennially , for every year s work is ever fresh and has new revelations . Last Saturday , Sue , Little Boy and I ( that s our household ) , went over for the fourth time this year . We try to make four trips a year . I wish you and your folks could get there , say once a year at least . It s better than a Sunday school picnic with somebody else to cook and look after the children . It s better because for one thing you can take something home with you beside tho empty basket , the dirty dishes and a backache . We carried away a lot ...
