^ trcsid ^ Written for The Wettern Rural . Only a Song . BX KATE SAXON . Under the rays ot the cold white moon A child was singing a plaintive tone , The broken chords ot a childish song , To the ears ot the heedless passing throng ; Bat cold as the stones to her tender feet Was the heart of the throng in the gas-lit street , Harrying past to the glad home light . And nameless joy of a Christmas night . For t ) ie desolate child no glad voice rang , No little stocking for her was hong , Mo little chair in the dear home light . No mother whispered , My bird , good night . Under the rays of the cold , white moon , A man was whistling a foolish tone ; Heeling along through the harrying throng , Hamming the bars of a drinking song . And still the sad child s plaintive tune Throbbed like a moan neath the oold , white moon . Faint and low as a wind-swept harp , Yet it rang like a knell to tho mans dumb heart , To his sleeping son ! like the tramp of doom , Was the sad child s song neath t...

I | g 0 fen $ - Infectious Maladies . Diphtheria is BO infectious a malady that we cannot be too familiar with its causes and prevention . Preventing is always easier than curing . We may do muoh toward preventing in various ways . Those persons , young or old , who have sore throat , offensive breath , and a feverish habit , should be secluded from all other persons . The former may not have diphtheria , but they have so many of the early indications of it as to warrant proper seclusion from others . As soon as they are known to have this infectious malady , they should be promptly and thoroughly isolated from those who are well , especially the young , who are always more susceptible to infectious diseases than are adults . The health officers , even of rural and sparsely settled districts , have duties to discharge in restricting the spreading of any disease that is apt to be severe and often fatal . They should be prompt in notifying all families that live near houses infected w...

Ifiliiorwl [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 14 March 1885

Ifiliiorwl President Cleveland . The President of the United States is Grover Cleveland . On Wednesday of last week Mr . Arthur retired from and Mr . Cleveland entered into the highest office in the gift of the people . The ohange , as a matter of course , causes all shades of feeling . The Republican naturally feels chagrined and , perhaps , apprehensive of evil . The Democrat is elated as would be expected , and doubtless honestly thinks that a greater good to the country could not have been accomplished . The large body of men who believe that the administration of the government is a practical business matter , in which simple justice to all is to be sought , are not sure of the future . To be candid they expect nothing more from the new administration than they got from the old . In the division of the spoils this class of men have little interest . The bread and butter brigade occupies but little of their thoughts , except that they would always like to see competent men in of...

< | pterarg [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 14 March 1885

< | pterarg Written for the Western Rural . Haunted Houses . B-r MINA D . BPIAB . In the dark and lonely woodland , Where the oaks and elms and chestnuts Stand knee deep in ferns and mosses , — With low roof and crumbling chimney , Stands a cottage , old , deserted , With ito swinging door half open , Choked by wild vines ; weeds and nettles Just behind this ancient cottage Is a deep , dark pool of water ; Not tt ripple stirs its surface , And the solemn weeping willows Cast the deepest gloom around it ; No birds come to bathe their pinions In its dark and murky water ; Here the owlets , unmolested . Nightly scream their hideous chorus ; And the night wind ghostly whispers , As he steals among the branches . Seems to hint of horrors nameless , Till the traveler , passing by it , Feels his very blood run cold . It is whispered that tis haunted By the spirit of a woman , Of a frail and lovely woman . Clad in garments misty , white , Hazel eyes of mournful beauty . Hair like...

lairg- [Newspaper Article] — Western Rural and American Stockman — 14 March 1885

lairg- Oleomargarine and Butterine . We have received several extensively signed petitions to the Illinois legislature , asking it to legislate against the bogus butters . We will see that these and all others that may oome are presented . This is a matter of great importance to those who make butter . From the very beginning of our opposition to these bogus products , we have shown that the sale of them lessened the consumption of genuine butter . . With a stup idity that was inexplicable or a dishonesty that was extraordinary , there were people and dairy papers that denied this ; and we have been compelled to devote considerable space , first and last , to answer the assertions and sophistry of this class of apologists for as vile a business as ever disgraced the earth . Bat there is now a very general consent to our position , and from one motive or another , nearly every journal that pays any attention to the dairy basinesst now says what THE RUBAI .
